Why It Matters
Learning about personal space and kind hands helps children build positive relationships, feel safe at school, and understand how their actions affect others.
Objective
Students will be able to identify personal space and understand that hands are for kind actions, not hitting, promoting a safe and respectful classroom environment.
Preparation
- • Review the Hands Are Not For Hitting Slide Deck to familiarize yourself with the content.
- • Print copies of the Kind Hands Worksheet for each student.
- • Prepare an open space in the classroom for the "Personal Space Bubble" activity.

Lesson Sequence

Warm-Up: My Space
Begin with a brief discussion using the Slide Deck (Slides 1-2). Ask students: "What is personal space? Where is your personal space?" Guide them to understand it's the invisible bubble around them.

Activity: Personal Space Bubble
Use Slide 3. Instruct students to stand and stretch their arms wide without touching anyone. Explain that this is their "personal space bubble." Have them move around gently, trying not to "pop" anyone else's bubble. Emphasize respect for everyone's bubble.

Discussion: Hands Are For Kind Actions
Return to desks. Use Slides 4-5. Lead a discussion about wonderful things hands are for: waving, drawing, building, helping, and gentle high-fives. Clearly state: "Hands are never for hitting, pushing, or hurting others." Explain that hitting hurts bodies and feelings.

Wrap-Up: Kind Hands Pledge
Distribute the Kind Hands Worksheet. Have students draw one kind thing they can do with their hands. Lead a class "Kind Hands Pledge" where students repeat after you: "My hands are for kind actions. I will respect personal space. I will keep my hands to myself."

TEACHER NOTE: Ask students to share their ideas. Guide them to understand it's the invisible space around them.

TEACHER NOTE: Be very clear and firm on this slide. Reiterate that hitting, pushing, or hurting others is not okay.
