Coach Pep Talk Script
30-MIN SESSION
Lesson: Growth Game Plan
Mission: Lead a high-intensity, locker-room style session where students shift from passive dreamers into strategic athletes who set one measurable target and engineer two defensive plays for obstacles.
Target Arena Academic / Personal
Core Play SMART Goal + 2 Plays
Materials Needed Slides, Cards, Blueprints
Class Format Direct + Partner + Gallery
00:00 - 04:00
Quarter 1: The Locker Room Hook & Highlight
Slide 1–2
Coach Action: Cue up Slide 2. Project your sports highlight clip (e.g., epic fourth-quarter comeback, runner falling and regaining the lead, or gymnast rebounding after a fall). Keep the room silent for 45 seconds during the play.
📢 Verbatim Coach Script: "Look at that tape. You aren't watching sheer luck or accidental genius. You’re watching someone who stared defeat, exhaustion, and failure right in the face—and refused to tap out. In sports, we call that perseverance. In life, we call that a Growth Mindset. Champions aren't built on game day under the lights; they are constructed in the dark during the reps nobody watches. Today, you are stepping out of the spectator stands. You are designing your personal Growth Game Plan. Thirty minutes on the game clock. Let's get to work."
04:00 - 11:00
Quarter 2: Direct Teach — The S.M.A.R.T. Playbook
Slides 3–5
Coach Action: Transition briskly to Slide 4. Use the athletic analogy of a playbook vs. a wishful dream. Contrast "I want to be better at soccer" with a quantified training schedule.
📢 Verbatim Coach Script: "A goal without a tactical system is just daydreaming. If an NFL coach walked into a huddle and said, 'Hey team, let's just win,' they’d lose by fifty points! We run plays. We run S.M.A.R.T. plays.
• S - Specific: Exactly what arena? Math test score? Free throw percentage? Reading lexile?
• M - Measurable: Put numbers on the scoreboard. From 72% to 85%.
• A - Action-Oriented: What physical reps will you execute?
• R - Realistic: Aggressive, yet reachable with hard grit.
• T - Time-Bound: Give me a buzzer deadline. By Friday, October 24th."
Call & Response Check: "When I say GAME, you say PLAN! GAME!" (Students: PLAN! ) "Now open your Game Plan Blueprint to Step 1."
Pacing Check: At minute 11:00, students should already have their pencils in hand.

Quarter 3: Independent Draft & Teammate Quality Check
Slide 6–7
Coach Move: Students draft their SMART goal and 2 Perseverance Actions on the Blueprint , then transfer their finalized target to the SMART Goal Card . At 15:00, announce: "Switch to Partner Review mode!"
📢 Verbatim Coach Script: "Athletes, eye on the clock. You have four minutes of solo focus. You are drafting one primary target and two defensive audibles. What happens when fatigue hits? What happens when phone notifications buzz during study time? That is your perseverance play. At minute fifteen, you will hand your card to your co-captain. Co-captains, use the Goal Quality Check . If their goal is vague, do not let them take the field with it. Challenge them to sharpen it!"
Coach Roaming Prompt 1: "Can you show me the exact date this gets completed? Let's anchor it to the calendar."
Coach Roaming Prompt 2: "What is your fallback play if you get frustrated on day three? Write that down!"
19:00 - 25:00
Quarter 4: Whole-Class Locker Room Gallery Walk
Slide 8
Coach Move: Play upbeat athletic/instrumental music. Students bring their tape or pins and post their SMART Goal Card on the designated "Locker Room Wall" or whiteboard perimeter.
📢 Verbatim Coach Script: "Locker room huddle! Take your cards and tape them under your squad banner on the wall. For the next five minutes, you are running the perimeter. Inspect at least three teammates' cards. Look at their perseverance actions. If you see a play that inspires you, tap their shoulder or leave a supportive tally mark. Real teams hold each other accountable."
25:00 - 30:00
Post-Game Debrief: Exit Ticket & Verbal Oath
Final Huddle
Coach Move: Bring all athletes back to desks. Students complete the bottom section of their Goal Quality Check (Exit Ticket: Obstacle Plan + Verbal Oath).
📢 Final Verbatim Pep-Talk: "Bring it in for the countdown. In thirty minutes, you turned a fuzzy hope into a battle-tested blueprint. Turn to the person next to you right now, look them in the eye, and state your one obstacle defense: 'When things get tough, I will...' Go! (Pause 15 seconds). Hand in your exit ticket as you exit the tunnel. Remember: Potential means nothing without execution. Let's get after it!"
Sideline Adjustments (Coach's Differentiation Toolkit)
Struggling with Scope: Provide sentence stems: "By [date], I will increase [skill] from [X] to [Y] by doing [action] 3x per week."
High-Achieving Students: Challenge them to set an "Audacious Stretch Metric" and identify a peer mentor or teacher check-in cadence.
Multilingual Learners: Pair with bilingual peer co-captains; allow goal descriptions in native language paired with quantified numeric metrics.

The SMART Goals Playbook
Champions aren't born in the spotlight. They are engineered through strategic goals and relentless perseverance.
Target: 1 SMART Goal + 2 Perseverance Actions Quarter 1: The Kickoff
Film Room: The Comeback Highlight
00:00 - 04:00
Watch The Tape
Notice the exact moment things fell apart—and how the athlete responded.
Huddle Questions:
1. When the mistake occurred, what was their immediate reaction?
2. What separates lucky winners from gritty champions?
3. How do you respond when your study plan or practice fails?
Key Concept: Perseverance is continuing toward a goal despite obstacles, fatigue, or delays.
Two Playbooks: Which One Are You Running?
Mindset Shift
The Fixed Mindset
"I'm just naturally bad at math."
• Sees effort as proof you lack natural talent.
• Gives up quickly when obstacles arise.
• Ignores constructive coaching feedback.
The Growth Mindset
"I haven't mastered this skill yet ."
• Treats mistakes as game film to learn from.
• Brain muscles grow stronger with intense reps.
• Views feedback as sideline coaching for growth.
Takeaway: Talent is just the starting point. Grit and strategy decide the champion.
