Goal Quest Lesson Plan Teacher Instructional Guide • Grade 6
Goal Quest Lesson Plan
Duration: 50–60 Mins
Focus: 2-Week & 1-Month Goals
Essential Questions
What transforms an ordinary wish into an actionable goal?
How do specific action steps prevent goals from being abandoned?
Why start with a 2-week sprint before committing to 1-month targets?
Learning Objectives (SWBAT)
Distinguish between vague wishes and testable 2-week / 1-month goals.
Select a target from 4 key domains (Academic, Org, Personal, Social).
Construct a 3-step Action Ladder and a proactive "If/Then" obstacle shield.
The 4 Goal Categories (Choice Menu)
Academic
Mastering skills, homework routines, quiz prep.
Organization
Locker upkeep, planner checks, backpack decluttering.
Personal & Habit
Sleep routines, hydration, screen-time balance, hobbies.
Social & Peer
Active listening, group project kindness, making new peers.
Suggested Lesson Pacing (50 Minutes)
00–08m
Hook & The Wish vs. Goal Challenge
Present Slide 2: "I want better grades" vs. "I will complete science notes for 15 mins daily." Students identify why wishful thinking fails without steps.
08–20m
Direct Instruction: The Target Formula (Target + Ladder + Shield)
Deconstruct the 3 parts: Concrete outcome, 3 action steps, and obstacle backup plan. Explain the power of the 2-week sprint vs. the 1-month milestone.
20–32m
Collaborative Practice: "Target Tune-Up" Activity Cards
Pairs examine low-power goals (too vague, no deadline, missing steps) and upgrade them using the provided sentence frames and action ladders.
32–45m
Independent Application: Target Tracker Worksheet
Students select one 2-week sprint goal and one 1-month milestone goal across different domains. Fill in action steps and daily tracker boxes.
45–50m
Accountability Partner Pledge & Exit Check
Students share their 2-week target with an elbow partner, sign accountability lines, and turn in or display their tracker.

Instructional Scripts & Guided Modeling
Teacher Delivery Guide
Teacher Modeling Script (The 2-Week Sprint)
“Class, imagine saying ‘I want to get organized.’ What does that even mean? Where do I look to see if I did it? Instead, I write: ‘For the next 14 days, I will empty and re-file papers from my binder every Tuesday and Thursday right before dinner.’ Notice three things: I know the exact task, I know the days, and I know when it happens. Let’s write down our when, where, and what.”
Teacher Modeling Script (The 1-Month Habit Shift)
“One month feels long to a 6th grader. If you don’t break it into 4 weekly checkpoints, week three arrives and nothing happened! When setting a 30-day goal, we ask: What is Week 1’s setup? What is Week 2’s routine? What is Week 3’s test? And how do we celebrate in Week 4?”
Grade 6 Pitfalls & Quick Redirection Strategies
Common Student Error Why It Fails Teacher Redirection Prompt “I want straight A’s in everything.” Outcome-focused without a controllable daily behavior; overwhelms student. “Which single subject needs the biggest boost right now? What 10-minute habit improves that score?” “I will study 3 hours every single night.” Unrealistic pacing that leads to burnout and immediate abandonment by Day 3. “Let’s start with a 15-minute focused sprint. Consistency beats extreme bursts.” “I forgot to do it on the weekend.” No trigger or physical cue linked to an existing routine. “What already happens every day? Stack your goal right after unpacking your bag.”
Scaffolding & Tiered Support
Level 1: Extra Support
Provide the Pre-Selected Goal Menu where students circle their choice and fill in only time and location. Provide 1 action step template rather than 3.
Level 2: Grade-Level
Use sentence starters to draft one 2-week sprint and one 1-month milestone. Independently write 3 action steps and identify 1 obstacle shield.
Level 3: Extension
Students design a double-track goal connecting an Academic goal with an Organization habit (e.g. locker clean-up directly feeding math homework submission).
Sprint Check-in Protocol (Days 7 & 14)
Spend 5 minutes every Friday having partners check trackers, count checkmarks, and tweak obstacle shields.

The Golden Difference
Is It a Wish or a Real Goal?
A Wish
“I want better grades in math.”
No specific deadline or finish line
No concrete actions to follow
Leaves success entirely to luck
Result: Often forgotten by next week
An Action Goal
“I will do 15 mins of math review every Mon & Wed at 4 PM for the next 2 weeks.”
Has exact days, time, and minutes
Clear 2-week testing window
100% under your control
Result: Builds steady momentum and real skill
A goal is simply a dream with a deadline and a daily routine.
Choice Menu
4 Types of Goals You Can Set
1. Academic
Mastering classwork, homework routines, reading.
“Read 20 pages every night before bed.”
2. Organization
Locker order, agenda/planner checks, clean binder.
“Clean my backpack every Friday after school.”
3. Personal & Habit
Sleep schedules, screen-free meals, sports practice.
“Put phone in hallway charging dock at 9 PM.”
4. Social & Peer
Kindness, making new friends, active listening in teams.
“Say one genuine compliment to a peer each day.”
Which category do you feel most excited to tackle right now?
The Blueprint
The 3-Part Target System
1
Clear Target
What exact result will you reach, and by what specific date?
Ask: “How will I prove I achieved this?”
2
Action Ladder
Three simple, repeatable steps you do every week to climb toward it.
Ask: “When and where will I do step 1?”
3
Obstacle Shield
Anticipate what will try to stop you and plan your backup move.
Ask: “If I feel tired, then I will...”
A goal without an obstacle shield breaks the first time you get busy!

Grade 6 Goal Setting
Evaluation Criteria: A strong upgrade must specify WHEN (days/time), WHAT (exact behavior), and HOW MUCH (duration/pages).
All 8 Stations
Station #1: Academic (2-Week Sprint) Quiz Perfection
Glitch: Outcome-based wish, outside 100% personal daily control.
Exemplar Upgrade: “For the next 14 days, I will review science flashcards for 10 minutes every day at 4:30 PM at the kitchen table.”
Station #2: Organization (2-Week Sprint) Locker Cleanup
Glitch: ‘Forever’ is unmeasurable; missing specific trigger routine.
Exemplar Upgrade: “For the next 2 weeks, I will throw away trash and stack textbooks spine-out every Friday during 8th period homeroom.”
Station #3: Academic (1-Month Milestone) Reading Quantity
Glitch: ‘A bunch of books’ provides no target number or pacing.
Exemplar Upgrade: “By October 15, I will finish two graphic novels by reading 15 pages in bed every weeknight before turning off my lamp.”
Station #4: Organization (1-Month Milestone) Late Assignments
Glitch: Framed negatively; does not establish a daily recording habit.
Exemplar Upgrade: “For the next 30 days, I will write every assignment in my agenda daily and check Google Classroom before leaving school at 3:15.”
Station #5: Personal (2-Week Sprint) 5 AM Routine
Glitch: Extreme jump causes immediate sleep debt and abandonment.
Exemplar Upgrade: “For the next 14 days, I will set my alarm 10 minutes earlier (6:40 AM) and complete 15 jumping jacks and stretches.”
Station #6: Personal (1-Month Milestone) Phone Elimination
Glitch: Total ban is unrealistic; needs clear boundaries instead.
Exemplar Upgrade: “For 30 days, I will place my phone in the kitchen charger from 8:30 PM to 7:00 AM on school nights.”
Station #7: Social (2-Week Sprint) Popularity Wish
Glitch: Cannot control others’ thoughts; needs concrete actions.
Exemplar Upgrade: “For 14 days, I will say ‘Good morning’ and share one genuine compliment with someone new at my lunch table.”
Station #8: Social (1-Month Milestone) Group Harmony
Glitch: ‘Never get mad’ ignores real conflict; lacks communication tool.
Exemplar Upgrade: “During group projects this month, I will practice asking ‘Can you explain your idea again?’ before responding when I disagree.”
