Materials Needed
โข Body Clues Slide Deck
โข Emotion Picture Cards Match
โข My Feelings Check-In Board
1 Warm-Up (4m)
2 Model Body Clues (6m)

PART 1: 4 MIN
The Emotion Detective Agency (Circle Hook)
Whole Group Rug
Teacher Hook: Put on imaginary detective glasses (circles around eyes). Whisper mysteriously: "Detectives, today we have a giant mystery to solve: our own bodies! When our feelings get big, our bodies leave secret clues. Who can spot them?"
๐ Quick Demonstration Script:
"Look at my face right now..." (Flash big grin, loose swinging arms). "What feeling do you see? Happy! What gave it away? The smile! My shoulders are relaxed."
"Now watch this..." (Clench fists, crunch eyebrows, stomp lightly). "Uh oh, my engine is revving! What feeling is this? Frustrated or mad! What was my body doing?"
PART 2: 6 MIN

PART 3: 6 MIN
Partner Mirror Practice: "Mirror, Mirror, Body Clue!"
Knee-to-Knee Pairs
Students sit knee-to-knee with a partner. Partner A acts as the "Feeling Model" and Partner B acts as the "Reflecting Mirror".
๐ฎ Round 1: Happy & Cruising (1.5 min)
Prompt: "Partner A, show a happy face and relaxed body. Partner B, mirror them! Detectives, touch your cheek: are they smiling? Touch your shoulders: are they floppy like noodles?" Switch roles.
๐ฎ Round 2: Frustrated & Revving (1.5 min)
Prompt: "A tower of blocks fell over! Partner A, show frustrated. Clench your fists tight! Squeeze your brows! Partner B, copy the tight fists. Feel how hard those hands get?" Switch roles.
๐ฎ Round 3: Upset & High Engine (1.5 min)
Prompt: "Your engine is running super high! Hand over heart: thump, thump, thump! Puffed-out cheeks! Partner B, mirror that fast breath. What is our body clue? Fast heart and hot cheeks!"
PART 4: 4 MIN
Cool-Down & Visual Engine Check-In
Calming Reset
The Engine Brake Technique (Star Breath): "When our engine runs too high, we can help bring it back to green cruising speed so we can play and learn."
Star Breath: Hold up 5 fingers like a star. Trace up the thumb (breathe in through nose), trace down (breathe out slowly like blowing out birthday candles). Repeat for 3 fingers.
Check-In Board: Each child points to their speed on the My Feelings Check-In Board (Green, Yellow, or Red).
Verbal Body Clue: Ask 2-3 volunteers: "What clue tells you your engine is in that zone?" (e.g., "My heart is quiet", "My fists are soft").
Differentiation & Support
Emergent Multilinguals: Use picture cards alongside verbal cues; encourage pointing to body parts (cheeks, heart, fists).
Sensory Sensitivity: Allow gentle body taps instead of full mirroring; offer a soft stress ball for squeezing practice.
Advanced Learners: Ask them to name why the body sends clues (to protect us and warn us to pause).
Teacher Look-Fors (Checklist)
Names at least one emotion correctly from visual card (Happy, Frustrated, Upset).
Identifies 1 physical body signal (e.g., tight fists, fast heart, relaxed shoulders).
Participates in Star Breathing or engine brake cool-down routine.

"Good morning, detectives! Place a hand on your heart and take one breath. What speed is your engine waking up at today? Hold up 1 finger for Green, 2 for Yellow, or 3 for Red."
Key Question: "What clue in your body told you that? (e.g., My eyes are sleepy, my hands are calm)."
B Big Feelings Co-Regulation Script (Engine High)
"I notice your fists are tight and your cheeks look warm. That's a body clue that your engine is running super high! It's okay to feel upset. Let's press our engine brakes together with a Star Breath."
