Recognizing High Energy
Yellow & Red Zone Check-In
Step 1: Notice Clues
Yellow Zone Engine Revving (75%)
High Energy • Wiggly • Silliness
Your body feels buzzy, excited, or restless. You can still make safe choices, but focus is slipping away.
Internal Signals to Watch:
Bouncing feet • Talking extra fast • Interrupting • Jittery stomach • Silliness
Red Zone Engine Overheating (100%)
Explosive • Overwhelmed • Out of Control
Your energy feels completely overwhelming. Your thinking brain is temporarily offline, driven by fight-or-flight.
Internal Signals to Watch:
Pounding heartbeat • Clenched fists • Yelling • Body wants to bolt or stomp
Remember: Every zone is normal! Strategies help you shift when high energy is not working for the situation.
Strategy Tool 01
Heavy Work & Movement Breaks
Proprioceptive Input
Wall & Desk Pushes
Plant your palms flat against a solid wall or sturdy desk. Press as hard as you can for 10 seconds. Release and repeat twice.
Calms muscle tension
Chair Push-Ups
Grip the sides of your chair with both hands. Straighten your arms and lift your bottom 1 inch off the seat. Hold for 5 seconds.
Quiet & desk-safe
Cross-Body Taps
March in place softly while tapping your right hand to your left knee, then left hand to right knee for 16 steady beats.
Reconnects brain sides
Science Insight: Pushing against firm resistance fires joint receptors that release natural calming signals into your brain.
Strategy Tool 02
Breathing & Sensory Grounding
Nervous System Brakes
4-Square Box Breathing
Trace a square in the air or on your desk while following this balanced rhythm:
1. Inhale Breathe in for 4s
2. Hold Pause gently for 4s
3. Exhale Slow release for 4s
4. Hold Rest empty for 4s
Slow exhales trigger your vagus nerve to slow your racing pulse.
5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Reset
Pulls racing thoughts back into physical reality right now:
- 5 Look for 5 things you can see (colors, shapes)
- 4 Notice 4 things you can touch (desk, fabric)
- 3 Listen for 3 sounds around the room
- 2 Identify 2 scents in the air
- 1 Take 1 deep belly breath
Key Tip: You can practice these silently without anyone else even noticing!
Strategy Tool 03
Calming Environment & Spaces
External Adjustments
Sound Dampening
Too much noise can make your nervous system spike. Put on noise-canceling headphones or step away from loud chatter.
Tool: Headsets or quiet corner
Lighting Shifts
Harsh fluorescent lights overstimulate tired eyes. Dim the lamps, look out an open window, or close your eyes for 30 seconds.
Tool: Soft lamps or eye cover
Tactile Anchors
Channel excess motor energy through small, quiet tools like therapy putty, smooth worry stones, or textured bands on chair legs.
Tool: Quiet sensory fidgets
Pro-Tip: Ask yourself: "Is my room too bright, too loud, or too crowded for me right now?"

Test It Out
Practice each tool when you feel calm. You cannot learn a new tool effectively when you are already in the Red Zone.
Rehearse before game time
2
Check Your Engine
Notice how your body feels 2 minutes later. Did your shoulders drop? Did your breathing slow down?
Listen to physical feedback
3
Pick Your Top 2
Keep 1 movement strategy (for physical wiggles) and 1 quiet strategy (for testing or silent work) ready to go.
