Empathy Circles Discussion GuideEmpathy Circles Facilitation & Discussion Guide Purpose The Empathy Circle is a safe space for students to process the emotional "data" they gathered during the role-play activity. Your role is to move them beyond simply describing what happened to exploring how it felt and why empathy changed the dynamic. Circle Norms Listen to Learn Listen with the intent to understand, not just to respond. Speak from "I" Share your own feelings and observations using "I feel" or "I noticed." Step Up / Step Back If you're quiet, try to share. If you've shared a lot, let others speak. Facilitation Prompts Round 1: The Experience 1 "For those who played the 'hurt' or 'excluded' characters, what was the hardest part about that role?" 2 "For the observers, what did you see in the characters' body language that signaled they needed empathy?" Round 2: The Empathy Shift 3 "When the 'empathy superpower' was used, how did the energy of the scenario change?" 4 "What specific words or actions made the character feel understood? Was it easy or hard to find those words?" Round 3: Real World Connection 5 "Why is it sometimes harder to show empathy in real life than in a role-play?" 6 "How can empathy help us resolve conflicts before they turn into big arguments?" Facilitation Tips If students are silent: "Try a 'Think-Pair-Share' first. Have them tell their neighbor one thing they noticed before opening it up to the whole circle." If it feels "surface level": "Ask 'What was happening beneath the surface?' or 'What do you think that character was saying in their head but not out loud?'"
