Students will define empathy, identify feelings in others, and practice compassionate responses.

Slide deck, Situation Cards, Blueprints Worksheet, crayons.

The Hook: Magic Shoes (10 mins)
"Imagine you have a pair of magic shoes that let you feel exactly what someone else is feeling when you put them on."
Ask: "Have you ever felt sad/happy because a friend was sad/happy?"
Define Empathy : Feeling with your heart what someone else feels in theirs.
Introduce the Bridge Builder metaphor: When we use empathy, we build a bridge between our hearts and theirs.

Direct Instruction: The Blueprint (15 mins)
Use the Empathy Bridge Slides to teach the three steps of empathy:

Guided Practice: Role-Play (15 mins)
Hand out Situation Cards to small groups or pairs.
Students act out the situation (e.g., "Someone dropped their lunch").
The "Bridge Builder" student must identify the feeling and offer a kind action or word.
Teacher circulates, prompting: "How can you tell they are sad? What can you say to build a bridge?"

Differentiation Strategies
For Younger Students (K)
Focus heavily on visual clues (faces, crying, smiling). Use physical props like a "Bridge Builder Vest" (orange vest) to make the role-play more concrete.
For Advanced Students (2nd)
Introduce "Complex Emotions." A friend might feel nervous AND excited. How do we build a bridge when feelings are messy?
Bridge-Building Discussion Prompts
"Is it possible to have empathy for someone even if you've never felt what they're feeling?" (e.g., someone losing a pet when you don't have one).
"What happens to the 'bridge' if we laugh at someone when they are hurt?"
"Sometimes building a bridge is just sitting quietly with a friend. Why is that enough?"

PRO-TIP: Empathy is a muscle. Don't just teach this lesson once. Praise "Bridge Builders" in the moment throughout the school day when you see students helping others or noticing feelings.
