Sensory & Fine Motor Scooping, pouring, leaf crumbling
Language & Vocab Repetitive songs & texture words
Social & Emotional Turn-taking & feeling identification
Step-by-Step Toddler Schedule
9:00 AM
Warm Welcome & Soft Sensory Exploration
Set out single dry leaves at the table. Encourage children to trace the ridges with fingers. Teach vocabulary: "rough", "bumpy", "dry".
9:20 AM
Circle Time: Repetitive Songs & Naming
Gather on the rug. Use visual leaf props (red, yellow, orange). Introduce the daily interactive song and count leaves from 1 to 3 together slowly.
9:40 AM
Collaborative Sensory Bin Exploration
Divide toddlers into pairs at sensory bins. Practice scooping dried oats, dried leaves, and acorn caps. Focus on turn-taking with shared large scoops.
10:10 AM
Fine Motor Sticky Leaf Collage
Stick pre-cut contact paper to the table (sticky side up). Kids press colorful silk or real leaves onto the paper to build a beautiful "leaf window".
Circle Time Prompts & Repetitive Songs
Repetitive Song
"The Leaves Are Falling Down"
(Tune: "London Bridge is Falling Down")
All the leaves are falling down,
Falling down, falling down.
Red, and yellow, orange, and brown,
Down on the ground!

Transitions & Collaborative Play
Sensory Bin Management & Social-Emotional Connection
Social Play
Focus: Emotional Awareness
Seamless Autumn Transitions
Transitioning 2-year-olds can be challenging. Use these themed gross-motor movements to move group-wide without distress:
The Gentle Autumn Breeze
How to do it: Tell children: "We are falling leaves! The wind is blowing us quietly to the tables." Have children raise arms, sway side-to-side, and whisper "Whoosh... whoosh" as they walk softly.
Little Squirrel Scurry
How to do it: Ask children to gather their "imaginary acorns" in their hands. Have them scurry on their tiptoes like quiet forest squirrels moving from the circle mat over to the hand-washing sink.
Collaborative Bin Play Framework
How to Guide Collaborative Bin Play (2-3 Toddlers per Bin)
Two-year-olds engage in parallel play, but can begin practicing simple turn-taking with sensory tools. Follow this 3-step adult prompts framework during bin play:
- Step 1: Narrate the Action. "Leo is holding the big wooden cup. Maya is waiting with her empty hands."
- Step 2: Model the Hand-off. Gently guide hands. "Leo, can you pour your leaves into Maya's cup? Splash!"
- Step 3: Celebrate Co-play. "You did it together! Look at the big leaf pile you made."
Nature & Feelings Social-Emotional Play
Activity: "How Does the Leaf Feel?"
Use natural autumn items to represent basic emotions (Happy, Sad, Excited, Tired). Since toddlers are visually and tactilely driven, mapping sensory attributes to emotions helps build empathy:
😊
Happy
Smooth, bright green leaf. Soft to pat.
😢
Sad
Wet, soggy brown leaf. Needs a dry hug.
😆
Excited
Crinkly, noisy orange leaf. Make it pop!
😴
Tired
Soft, sleeping dried moss pillow.
