The Science of Coping Strategies
A coping strategy is something safe and smart we choose to do to help our mind and body feel steady, focused, and ready when our emotions feel too big.
Calming the Body
BREATHE
How it works: Deep breathing slows down your racing heartbeat and signals your brain that you are safe.
Square Breathing
Inhale for 4s → Hold 4s → Exhale for 4s → Hold 4s. Repeat 3 times.
Best for: Sudden worry, rapid heartbeat, or feeling angry.
Reframing Thoughts
THINK
How it works: Changing how you talk to yourself helps your brain switch from feeling panicked to finding a smart solution.
The "3 C's" Strategy
Catch the negative thought, Check if it is true, Change it to helpful talk.
Best for: Test anxiety, frustration, or negative self-talk.
Releasing Energy
MOVE
How it works: Quick exercises release the physical energy and tension that build up in your muscles when you are stressed.
Resistance Push
Do slow wall pushes or press your hands flat together for 10s to discharge tension.
Best for: Feeling hyper, restless, or physically tight.
Grounding Senses
SENSORY
How it works: Focusing closely on your immediate environment pulls your mind away from overwhelming worries.
5-4-3-2-1 Technique
Notice 5 things you see, 4 you feel, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste.
Best for: Feeling spacey, highly distracted, or panicked.
Self-Regulation Check-In
Check in with your mind and body before choosing your coping strategy:
GREEN STATE Calm & Ready
Ready to learn, focus, and work happily with others.
YELLOW STATE Anxious or Restless
Use Move or Think tools before emotions grow too big.
RED STATE Overwhelmed or Angry
Stop and use Breathe or Sensory tools to reset safety.
💡 Self-awareness is power. Recognizing your state is the first step to staying in control!
