Understanding Mental Shortcuts
What is a
Cognitive Bias?
A cognitive bias is a mental shortcut or "glitch" in our thinking that happens when our brains process information too quickly.
Our brains handle billions of pieces of data daily. Shortcuts help us survive, but they can make us jump to incorrect conclusions!
The Brain's Auto-Pilot
We make about 35,000 decisions daily. Auto-pilot keeps us from getting completely overwhelmed.
The Danger Zone
These fast judgements often ignore hard evidence and can cloud our objective decision-making.
Think of it like an optical illusion, but for your logic!
DEEP DIVE 5 Minutes
Meet the Mind Trap
Confirmation
Bias
The natural human tendency to search for, interpret, and recall information in a way that confirms our pre-existing beliefs.
How confirmation bias works in real-time:
01
We seek out sources that say exactly what we already believe is true.
02
We ignore or dismiss excellent evidence that suggests we are wrong.
03
We remember facts that support us, but quickly forget facts that don't.
💡 Example: Searching "Why TikTok is awesome" instead of "How TikTok affects brain chemistry".
TOOLKIT The Bias Buster
How to C.H.E.C.K. Your Thinking
The C.H.E.C.K. Toolkit
Use this checklist to break free from auto-pilot confirmation bias:
C
Challenge
Challenge assumptions. Am I just assuming this is correct without checking?
H
Hunt
Hunt for evidence. Is there actual high-quality data that directly disproves me?
E
Evaluate
Evaluate sources. Who wrote this? Are they reputable and medically sound?
C
Consider
Consider biases. Do I really want this to be true? Is my brain taking shortcuts?
K
Keep
Keep open mind. Be prepared to change your perspective when the facts do.
We will apply this to a real scenario in exactly 1 minute.
MISSION Breakout Challenge
Help Siti!
The ChatGPT Mind Trap
Siti is writing a history essay. She firmly believes that "social media completely destroys teenage attention spans."
She types "Why social media ruins attention spans ChatGPT". ChatGPT gives her paragraphs agreeing with her.
Her teammate says: "Some clinical studies say social media actually helps students build rapid filtering skills." Siti ignores her, thinking ChatGPT has already proven her right.
Your Mission
Siti has fallen straight into a massive Confirmation Bias trap.
She is about to submit her paper. Your group must rescue her by using the C.H.E.C.K. Toolkit to help her think critically!
Are you ready to head into your breakout rooms?

LANDSCAPE WORKSPACE
The Case: Siti's ChatGPT Trap
Siti is writing a history essay. She firmly believes "social media completely destroys teenage attention spans." To prove it, she types: "Why social media ruins attention spans ChatGPT".
Siti copies ChatGPT's agreement directly. Her peer, Maya, presents a peer-reviewed study: "This study says social media helps teenagers build rapid information-filtering skills." Siti ignores her: "AI proved I'm right, I'm done!"
Part 1: Quick Case Analysis
1. What was Siti's pre-existing assumption before doing any research?
2. How did her prompt query guarantee she would only find what she wanted?
3. Write an alternative, balanced query she should type into ChatGPT instead:
Part 2: The C.H.E.C.K. Plan • Write one clear, actionable sentence of advice for each step to help Siti salvage her history paper.

Detailed Pacing Outline
5 MIN
1. Warmer: "Believe, Doubt, or Not Sure?"
Present Slide 2. Direct students to respond to the three statements using emojis in the chat. Take 2-3 quick answers.
Teacher Transition Script: "Notice how fast our brains reacted. Our brains constantly take shortcuts to process information instantly. Sometimes, these shortcuts trap us into false judgments without us even knowing. Today, we're busting those traps."
10 MIN
2. Interactive Delivery: "Meet the Two Biases"
Present Slides 3-5. Introduce Cognitive Bias as a mental auto-pilot glitch. Deep dive into Confirmation Bias (seeking only what supports our view). Introduce the C.H.E.C.K. Toolkit as an alternative logical checklist.
20 MIN
3. Group Activity: "Help Siti!" Case Study
Send students to breakout rooms (3-4 per group). Ensure they have the landscape worksheet. Assign each group a specific C.H.E.C.K. letter to present at the end, but they must complete all of them.
