Instructional Steps
1
Introduction: The Emotional Weather Report
10 Minutes
Begin with a brief discussion about different emotions and how they feel in our bodies. Ask students: "What does it feel like when you start to feel frustrated? Or excited?"
Introduce the idea of an 'emotional early warning system,' similar to a weather forecast. Use My Feeling Forecast Slide Deck to guide this discussion. (Slides 1-3)
2
Body Signal Scavenger Hunt
15 Minutes
Distribute the Body Signal Scavenger Hunt Activity . Explain that our bodies often give us clues about our emotions before we even realize what we're feeling.
Have students work individually or in small groups to identify physical sensations associated with different emotions.
Facilitate a brief share-out and discussion of their findings. (Slide 4)
3
My Personal Warning Lights
15 Minutes
Introduce the concept of personal emotional 'warning lights' using My Feeling Forecast Slide Deck (Slide 5).
Distribute the My Personal Warning Lights Worksheet . Guide students to complete the worksheet, identifying their specific body signals for different emotions and thinking about proactive strategies.
Discuss how recognizing these signals early can help them manage their emotions more effectively (Slide 6).
4
Cool Down: Reflection and Practice
5 Minutes
Conclude with a brief reflection. Ask students: "What is one new thing you learned about your emotions today?" or "What is one 'warning light' you will try to notice this week?"
Encourage students to continue paying attention to their body signals as a way to practice their emotional early warning system. (Slide 7)
Pro Tip: Middle school students respond well to the dashboard metaphor. Encourage them to see their emotions as data points rather than "good" or "bad" experiences.
