A cohesive, visual emotional regulation lesson for early learners using a stoplight system (Red = high energy/angry, Yellow = medium energy/silly or anxious, Green = ready to learn/calm) to identify feelings and select color-coded cool-down activities. Includes slides, a teacher guide, sorting cards, and a calming corner choice board.
Spread out the Stoplight Calm Sorting Cards on the rug. Place three colored circles (Red, Yellow, Green) in the center. Have students take turns drawing a card, acting out the feeling/clue (e.g., stomping feet or smiling quietly), and placing it on the matching stoplight color.
Key Guiding Questions: "Look at Maya's face in this card. Her eyebrows are down and her teeth are showing. What light is her body showing? What tool can she use right now to slow down her engine?"

Setting Up the "Calming Corner" (10 mins)
The Stoplight Choice Board should be permanently posted in your classroom's designated quiet/calming area. Introduce this space as a positive, safe station rather than a punishment spot.
Introduction Protocol
Show students the corner when they are in the Green Zone. Let them practice sitting there, looking at the Choice Board, and choosing a calming technique before they need to use it.
Proactive Redirection
When you notice a student escalating to Yellow or Red, gently whisper: "Your engine is running fast. Let's head to the Stoplight Corner and choose a tool together."
Teacher Tips & Troubleshooting
TIP 1
Check-in routines: Use the stoplight terms daily. During morning meetings, have students hold up Red, Yellow, or Green fingers to indicate their current energy level. This normalizes talking about feelings.
TIP 2
Keep it positive: Avoid labeling kids themselves as "Red" or "Yellow" (e.g., "Don't be a red light boy!"). Instead, reference the behavior or "internal engine" (e.g., "I see your engine is running Red right now, how can we help?").
TIP 3
Model it yourself: When you feel frustrated (e.g., a spilled marker or computer problem), talk it out loud: "Whew, my engine is starting to run yellow/red. I am going to stop, take a deep belly breath, and reset!"
