Part 1: The Hook — Feeling Stormy
10 Minutes
Ask students: "Raise your hand if you have ever felt a storm inside your tummy or brain—maybe a super fast heartbeat, hot ears, or wiggly hands?" Briefly model a moment of high emotion (e.g., dropping clean papers, feeling frustrated).
Discussion Prompt: "When our bodies feel like a storm, we are not bad kids—we just have big energy. What does our classroom do when it storms outside? We stay safe inside. The Calming Corner is our indoor safe space for body storms."

Part 2: What is the Corner? (Direct Teach)
12 Minutes
Deliver the core content using the "Corner Citizens Slides" . Focus heavily on defining boundaries:
What it is: A charging station for our battery. A place to take 3 deep breaths, use a tool, reset, and return.
What it is NOT: A play space, a time-out/punishment corner, or a place to sleep.
The Rules: 1) Go when your engine is too high/low. 2) Set the 3-minute timer immediately. 3) Choose 1 active cool-down tool. 4) Return gently.

Part 3: Guided Practice — Citizen Scenarios
13 Minutes
Conduct short role-play scenarios with selected students to model correct vs. incorrect corner citizenship:
Green Choices (Model)
A student drops their pencil, sighs loudly, does the "hand signal", walks quietly to the corner, flips the timer, takes deep breaths with the Star breathing board, and walks back smiling.
Red Choices (To Correct)
A student runs to the corner, throws themselves onto the cushion, grabs a toy, begins playing loudly, and ignores the timer. Have students "pause" the scene and guide them to tell the student what rule they missed.
4
Part 4: Independent Practice — Passport Training
10 Minutes
Distribute the "Corner Explorer Passport" . Explain that every student will become a certified Calming Corner Citizen.
Have students complete their personal pledge at their desks first.
Send students to do a 1-minute visual walkthrough of the corner in small groups of 3-4 (to prevent crowding). They will visually inspect the choice board and tools.
Students color their visual "badges" on their passports once they review the steps.
Differentiation & Support Strategies
For Struggling Regulators:
Introduce a "co-regulation card." The teacher goes to the corner with the student for the first 3 uses to quietly model deep breathing and tool selection.
Non-Verbal / ELL Students:
Ensure "My Cool Down Choice Board" is readily visible in the corner. Teach the hand gesture (crossed thumbs forming a quiet bird) to request the space non-verbally.
Pro-Tips for Success
Avoid the "Escape Trap": If a student uses the corner to avoid work they find difficult, do not ban them from the corner. Instead, bring their work folder to the corner, allowing them a quieter space to finish the work with a sensory tool. This keeps the corner healthy.

Welcome to Our Safe Space!
Slide 1 of 7
What is the Calming Corner?
It is a special area designed to help us feel safe, relaxed, and ready to learn.
The Corner IS...
A cozy space to sit and take deep breaths.
A quiet spot to rest your busy brain.
A place to use special tools to feel better.
The Corner IS NOT...
A playroom for sharing toys or talking to buddies.
A timeout spot or a place where you are in trouble.
A place to hide or avoid classwork forever.
Every citizen helps keep it quiet and clean! Slide 2 of 7
When Do I Visit the Corner?
We listen to our bodies! Use the corner when your energy engine is too high or too low.
🔥
Too High
Your heart is beating fast, you feel angry, frustrated, or like you want to yell or cry.
🧊
Too Low
You feel sleepy, extremely sad, lonely, or your brain feels totally stuck.
🌱
Just Right
You feel calm, focused, happy, and fully ready to listen to the teacher and participate!
The corner helps get our engine back to "Just Right"! Slide 3 of 7
The 3 Calming Citizen Rules
To make the corner helpful for everyone, we follow three simple rules:
1
Only 1 Citizen
The corner is a quiet bubble. Only one person can be in the corner at a time.
2
Use the Timer
Flip the sand timer right away! You have 3 minutes to rest, reset, and refresh.
3
Stay in the Space
Keep your body inside the corner. Use the special sensory tools gently and quietly.
Being a good citizen protects our space! Slide 4 of 7
How to Reset in 3 Steps
When you sit down, follow this simple routine to recharge your battery:
01
Take 3 Deep Breaths
Smell the flowers, blow out the candles. Slowly and gently.
02
Choose One Tool
Pick from our Choice Board: squish a ball, draw a picture, or trace a path.
03
Ready to Return
When the timer ends, check your engine, say goodbye, and join us back in class.
