Calm Engine Lesson Plan
35–45 Minutes
Transitions Focus: Lunch & Recess
Lesson Purpose & Rationale
Young learners entering the classroom from noisy cafeterias (sensory auditory clatter) or recess (intense vestibular/proprioceptive stimulation) often experience autonomic nervous system dysregulation. This lesson normalizes internal arousal states using an accessible "engine" metaphor and equips students with proprioceptive kinetic resets to shift back into their calm, receptive learning gear.
Objectives
Identify internal engine speed (Low, Just Right, Revved Up).
Execute 3 kinetic body resets to shift autonomic arousal.
Build a personal Pit Stop desk gauge.
The Three Engine Speeds Framework
Non-judgmental physiological awareness
Low Gear 🐢
Cold Engine / Low Battery
Under-stimulated, sluggish, slumped posture, drifting eyes, delayed responding.
Physical Clues:
Heavy eyelids, yawning, floppy limbs, chin resting on hands.
Need: Gentle alerting input & spine stretch.
Just Right 🚗
Smooth Cruising Speed
Balanced sensory threshold, attentive eyes, steady breathing, ready to connect & learn.
Physical Clues:
Relaxed shoulders, settled feet, soft gaze, calm voice volume.
Need: Maintenance & positive reinforcement.
Revved Up 🏎️
Overheating / Turbo RPM
Sensory overload, high motor output, loud vocal tone, rapid breathing, bouncing.
Physical Clues:
Clenched fists, red cheeks, fidgety feet, darting eyes, shouting.
Need: Heavy proprioceptive joint push & long exhales.
Sensory Transition Flashpoints (Cafeteria & Playground)
🥪 Cafeteria Aftermath: Auditory & Olfactory Clutter
Echoing chatter, scraping chairs, and food smells overload the sensory gating filter. Students often enter class in a flight/defensive mode with shallow chest breathing.
⚽ Playground Aftermath: Vestibular Acceleration
Spinning, running, and abrupt bell whistles leave vestibular fluid sloshing and adrenaline elevated. Bodies require deep somatic compression before cognitive tasks can resume.

Step-by-Step Lesson Execution
01
The Pit Crew Hook: What Sound Does Your Engine Make? (5 Mins)
Warm-Up
Gather learners on the carpet. Play or mimic two sounds: a stuttering lawnmower (too slow), a screeching racecar engine (overheating), and a gentle purring hybrid vehicle (smooth cruising). Ask: "Have you ever walked inside from recess feeling like your engine was smoking and screeching?" Validate that all engine speeds are natural.
02
Slide Exploration & Dashboard Language (10 Mins)
Direct Teaching
Present the Calm Engine Slide Deck . Teach the three speeds. Emphasize that "Revved Up is not bad—it helps you score goals on the soccer field, but it makes listening to a story feel impossible!" Practice matching bodily clues (clenched fists vs. loose jelly hands).
03
Kinetic Reset Drills: The 3 Pit Stop Mechanics (12 Mins)
Kinetic Practice
Model and rehearse the 3 kinetic resets whole-group so muscle memory locks in:
1. Piston Wall Push Heavy work: palms flat on wall, push for 7s count with feet planted. (Proprioceptive)
2. Tire Deflate Hiss Big breath in through nose; slow "Ssssss" exhale as body melts to carpet. (Vagus nerve)
3. Wiper Blade Swings Cross-midline sway: arms sway left & right rhythmically to reset vestibular balance.
04
Interactive Toolkit & Student Dashboard (10 Mins)
Application
Distribute the Gear Shift Reset Activity or My Engine Speed Worksheet . Students identify their current engine gear and select their preferred kinetic reset tool to tape to their desk or clip to their lanyard for future lunch/recess transitions.

Say This, Not That
❌ Avoid Demand Statements:
"Sit down right now! Stop running! Why are you shouting? Recess is over, you need to listen!"
Increases threat perception & amygdala hijack.
✅ Use Engine Body Observation:
"I see your engine is spinning in turbo gear right now. That playground was fast! Let's do two tire deflates together before we open books."
Affirms physiology, mirrors safety, offers shared action.

The Cafeteria
Clattering trays, loud echoing voices, and crowded lines!
👀 Ears get overloaded and bodies feel buzzes!
⚽
The Playground
Fast running, spinning on swings, and the loud whistle blowing!
💨 Feet want to keep racing even inside the door!
Does your body sometimes feel like a racecar that can't stop?

What Speed Is Your Engine?
3 Gears
🐢 Low Gear
Too Slow
• Sleepy eyes
• Heavy floppy body
• Slumped at desk
Needs a gentle jumpstart!
🚗 Just Right
Cruising Speed
• Calm breathing
• Focused listening
• Ready to learn & share
Smooth and balanced!
🏎️ Revved Up
Too Fast
• Racing heartbeat
• Fidgety jumping limbs
• Loud outside voice
Needs a pit stop brake!
💡 No gear is "bad"! But in the classroom, our minds learn best in Just Right Gear .

The Piston Wall Push
💪 Heavy Work Reset
1
Put both flat hands against the strong wall.
2
Plant your tires (feet) firmly on the floor.
3
Push with all your muscle power for 7 seconds!
