Calm Body Explorers: Facilitator Guide
Session Framework for 1–2 Preschool Learners (2–3 Sessions / Week)
Developmental Purpose & Session Context
Designed specifically for preschool learners exhibiting low frustration tolerance, emotional impulsivity, and short sustained attention (3–7 minutes). Grounded in neuro-relational co-regulation: the child borrows the adult's calm nervous system through tactile modeling, minimal verbal lecturing, and high-frequency visual predictability.
Predictable 15-Minute Session Blueprint
1 0–3 min
Visual Check-In
Child points to emotion dial (Happy, Sad, Mad, Nervous). Adult mirrors and validates without questioning.
Goal: Emotion naming
2 3–7 min
Calm Tool Intro
Introduce one concrete sensory or breath tool (e.g., Flower & Pinwheel breath or Turtle Shell Tuck). Adult models with body.
Goal: Multi-sensory cue
3 7–12 min
Playful Practice
Active game: Freeze Dance, Slow Turtle crawl, or "Push the Mountain" wall presses. Practice switching between fast & calm.
Goal: Motor regulation
4 12–15 min
Token & Reset
Child places success token/sticker on the Calm Choices Board. Explicit transition warning before returning to classroom.
Goal: Smooth transition
The 4 Foundational Preschool Calming Tools
1. Flower & Pinwheel Breath
Hold up 1 finger: "Smell the flower" (deep inhale through nose). Hold up 2 fingers: "Blow the pinwheel" (slow exhale through soft lips).
2. Turtle Shell Tuck
Crouch or pull knees to chest, tuck chin like a turtle resting in its shell. Squeeze gently for 3 counts, then slowly peek out and soften shoulders.
3. Bear Hug & Heavy Push
Proprioceptive input: Wrap arms tight across chest for a firm self-hug, or press both palms flat against a solid wall for 5 seconds to ground high energy.
4. Five-Finger Sensory Tap
Trace hand with index finger: breathe in sliding up thumb, breathe out sliding down. Visual + tactile focus anchors wandering eyes and hands.
Rule of Thumb: In preschool, connection precedes correction. Regulate first, relate second, teach third. Page 1 of 2
Co-Regulation Scripts & Behavior Responses
De-escalation protocols and environment setups for 1–2 learners
Session Tools
Co-Regulation Verbal Framing (Say This vs. Avoid That)
| Instead of Saying... (Ineffective) | Say This Instead (Co-Regulating) | Adult Action / Somatic Cue |
|---|
| "Calm down right now!" | "You are safe. I am right here with you. Let’s breathe together." | Drop your physical level to eye level; soften voice tone and slow speech tempo. |
| "Stop touching that / sit still!" | "Hands need a job. Let's give your hands this squishy ball or bear hug." | Hand a designated sensory manipulative directly into child's open hands. |
| "Why did you do that?" | "Your face looks mad. Your body has big energy. Let’s do a wall push." | Avoid abstract "why" questions which trigger fight/flight shutdown in preschoolers. |
| "Look at me when I talk!" | "Show me your listening ears. Point to the picture card." | Tap your own ear gently or tap the visual card. Do not force prolonged direct eye contact. |
Tiered Response: Refusal, Wandering, or Big Emotions
Scenario A: Wandering / Off-Task
Attention Drift
Do not chase verbally. Hold up the visual picture schedule. Say: "First 2 turtle breaths, then 1 stamp on your card." Use physical boundaries (defined carpet square or floor tape).
Scenario B: Outburst / Throwing
Acute Dysregulation
Clear dangerous items silently. Keep child in sight. Maintain calm presence. Say: "My job is to keep you safe. Your body is big mad. We will wait right here until your body is ready."
Scenario C: "I Don't Want To!"
Task Refusal / Rigid "No"
Offer forced choices with high visual control: "Do you want to breathe like a lion or blow like a pinwheel?" or "Do you want green sticker or blue star?" Autonomy reduces defiance.
Environmental Antecedents
- • Clearly defined sitting spots (cushion or tape line).
- • Remove distracting visual toys from direct eye line.
- • Have tactile items (stress squishy, weighted lap pad) ready.
Pacing for 2–3x Weekly Cadence
- • Day 1: Focus on identifying feelings & Flower breath.
- • Day 2: Reinforce feelings + add Turtle Tuck & Bear Hug.
- • Day 3: Roleplay real classroom triggers + celebrate tokens.
