Part 1: The Hook & Statue Challenge (0:00 - 4:00) Slides 1 – 2
[Stage Action]: Take center stage with calm confidence. Do not shout over students. Stand still until room volume drops naturally. Click to Slide 1.
"Good morning, 5th grade! Look around this room. You are the leaders of this school. Younger kids watch how you walk down the hall, how you handle frustration, and how you treat each other. Today, we're talking about the one skill that separates ordinary kids from true champions: self-control."
[Click Slide 2 • Interactive Drill]:
"Before we talk about brain science, let's test your reflexes right now. On my count of three, I want every 5th grader in this gym completely frozen. No twitches, no whispering, no eye-rolling. 3... 2... 1... FREEZE!"
Hold the freeze for a full 5 seconds. Walk two steps. Look around playfully.
"And... relax! What did you feel in those 5 seconds? You probably felt an itch to look at your friend or laugh. That urge is an impulse. An impulse happens in milliseconds. But what you just proved is that your brain has a brake pedal."
Part 2: The Muscle Metaphor & Impulse Traps (4:00 - 8:00) Slides 3 – 4
[Click Slide 3]: Address the core growth mindset message clearly.
"Here is the big secret: nobody is born with automatic, perfect self-control. It is not magic. It's a muscle. If you want to do 20 pull-ups, you have to practice every day. Self-control works identically. Right now, at age 10 and 11, your prefrontal cortex is remodeling faster than at any time since you were a toddler."
[Click Slide 4 • Audience Poll]:
"Let's get real. Where does impulse strike 5th graders? Look at the screen: Blurting out jokes before raising a hand? Clapping back with an insult when someone bugs you? Opening extra tabs on your laptop? Shoving in line? Raise your hand if at least one of these got you this week."
Raise your own hand honestly. Acknowledge hands across the room: "Look around—every single hand is up, including mine. That's why we train."

Mind Over Impulse: Teacher Follow-Up Guide
10–15 MIN POST-ASSEMBLY
5th Grade Advisory / Homeroom
Purpose: Connect the gym assembly energy immediately to classroom culture. Help students translate general ideas about self-control into concrete personal commitments and establish a shared classroom vocabulary for the rest of October.
Immediate Debrief Lesson Plan (10-12 Minutes) Classroom Delivery
1
Distribute Playbooks & Silent Reset (2 Mins)
Hand out the Mind Power Pocket Tracker. Have students write their name and homeroom in complete silence. Say: "Notice how quiet our room is right now. You are practicing Tool 1 (Stoplight Red) without even speaking."
2
Whole-Class Debrief & Normalizing the Struggle (5 Mins)
Facilitate a brief circle or desk-facing discussion using these prompts:
• Prompt A: "What makes self-control harder in 5th grade than when you were in 2nd or 3rd grade?" (Look for: more phone/device freedom, wanting to fit in, peer teasing, less direct supervision).
• Prompt B: "Why is the Yellow Light (Thinking ahead) harder than Red (stopping) or Green (reacting)?"
• Prompt C: "Who can share an example of a good 'Coach Talk' phrase you've used before?"
3
Goal Setting Commitment (3 Mins)
Guide students to fill in Section 1: My October Target on their tracker. Insist on specificity: avoid vague goals like "be good"; push for "wait 3 seconds before responding if someone takes my pencil."
Shared Teacher Cues & Non-Verbal Signals
"Hit the Yellow Light"
When a student is about to blurt or escalate an argument, simply hold up a yellow index card or tap your temple. It avoids public scolding and prompts thinking.
"Run the 3-Second Reset"
When a student slips up, do not linger on guilt. Say: "Okay, pause. Notice it, own it, reset. What is your next move?" Reinforces growth mindset.
