Duration 30 Minutes
Subject SEL / Writing
Focus Self-Advocacy
Core Objective
Students will learn to define their personal physical space ("the bubble"), identify when boundaries are crossed, and practice polite, assertive verbal scripts to request space.
Step-by-Step Pacing
1. Define "The Bubble" (5 mins) MINS 0-5
Stand with arms extended. Rotate in a circle. Tell students: "This is your personal space bubble. No one is allowed inside without your polite invitation."
2. Scripting Assertion (10 mins) MINS 5-15
Introduce the "Three-Part Strong Script": 1. Say stop, 2. Name the action, 3. Say what you need.
Model: "Stop, please don't push my chair. I need space to focus."
3. Trace & Write Practice (10 mins) MINS 15-25
Distribute the Boundary Boss Worksheet . Guide kids to trace the power phrases. Point out that tracing helps our bodies feel the weight of our strong words!
4. Pair Share & Bubble Check (5 mins) MINS 25-30
Students pair up to practice saying their sentence frames aloud using a firm, polite, "talking voice" (not whispering, not shouting).
Anxiety Support
Students who experience extreme academic or social anxiety may lock up when asked to assert themselves.
Traceable starters remove the physical cognitive load of spelling, letting them focus entirely on emotional connection.
Handwriting guides provide highly structured parameters that lower processing fear.
Avoid Pitfalls
Watch for these common student misunderstandings during practice:
• "Saying no is mean": Reframe boundaries as helpers that keep friendships happy and safe.
• Aggressive Delivery: Coach kids away from defensive shouting. Focus on the calm "Expert Voice."
• Over-politeness: Guard against laughing or whispering while setting a boundary, which reduces clarity.
Bubble Step Game
Have partners slowly take steps toward each other. As soon as partner A feels their space boundary reached, they practice making a stop gesture with their hand and saying: "Stop, thank you. This is my boundary."
