Responding to Big Feelings Discussion Guide Responding to Big Feelings
Small Group Discussion Guide
Facilitator Note
Use these prompts to guide a supportive discussion about managing frustration and anger. Emphasize that there are many tools, and practice is the key to alchemy—transforming reactions into responses.
Opening the Discussion
"We've just learned about a bunch of different ways to handle those intense feelings. Which of these strategies felt new or interesting to you?"
"Why is it important to have many strategies, instead of just one or two? Think about different situations you might face."
Applying the Strategies
Scenario A: School Stress
"Imagine you're really frustrated with a difficult school assignment. Which strategy from our Calm Toolkit do you think you'd try first? Why?"
Scenario B: Conflict
"What if someone says something unkind to you? What would be a helpful way to respond using one of our strategies? What would be an unhelpful way?"
Context Matters
"When might it be helpful to 'Talk It Out' versus using a quiet, personal strategy like 'Safe Space Visualization'?"
The Power of Practice
"Why do you think practicing these new strategies before you're super angry is important?"
"What should you do if one strategy doesn't help you feel calmer right away?"
"Being an Anger Alchemist means choosing responses that are safe for ourselves and others."

Discussion Guiding Points
Why have MANY strategies?
Different situations and intensity levels require different tools. What works in one moment might not work in another. It also caters to individual preferences.
Unkind Words Scenario
Helpful: Count-Down, Power Phrases, Safe Space.
Unhelpful: Yelling back, hitting, or sulking.
Importance of Practice
Like any skill, practicing emotional regulation when calm builds "muscle memory." When really angry, the brain is in a different state; pre-practiced tools are easier to use automatically.
If a strategy doesn't work?
Try another one! It's okay to try a few until you find what helps in that specific moment. If the feeling is too big, ask for help from a trusted adult.
