Spooky Steps

A high-engagement kindergarten SEL lesson focused on listening, following multi-step directions, and whole-body self-regulation using friendly Halloween monster motifs.

"Color your pumpkin orange, then draw a big happy triangle smile on its face."

Pause 60–90 seconds while children draw and color.

Box 2: Night Sky Bat (2-Step Color & Count) Crayons: Purple & Blue

"First, color the bat's wings purple. Second, draw 2 blue stars in the night sky."

Encourage children: "Did you count two stars?"

Box 3: Dancing Monster (2-Step Spatial) Crayons: Green & Purple

"First, color the monster's belly green. Second, draw a purple circle around its feet."

Observe: Check if students wait to hear both colors before grabbing them.

Box 4: Magic Potion Jar (2-Step Creative Action) Crayons: Blue & Orange

"First, color the potion liquid blue. Second, draw 3 orange bubbles floating up into the air!"

Count bubbles together: "One, two, three bubbles!"

Phase 4: SEL Debrief & Self-Awareness Circle (7 min)

Slide 6

Gather students back to the rug or attention posture for quick reflective dialogue:

Impulse Question: "What was the hardest part? Was it waiting to grab your crayon while I was still speaking?"

Regulation Question: "What did your body do to help you stay calm and wait your turn?"

Direct students to the bottom of their worksheet: "Look at the 3 monster faces. Circle the one that shows how your listening superpowers grew today!"

Counselor Differentiation & Support Strategies

Wiggly Learners: Provide a tactile fidget or have them touch their nose while listening to keep hands occupied.

Multilingual / EL: Hold up the actual crayon color (e.g., orange crayon) while speaking the word to pair visual with auditory.

Fast Finishers: Ask them to whisper-count the bubbles or draw a tiny spider next to their potion jar.
