Step-by-Step Lesson Execution
Phase 1: Feelings Weather Check-In (5 Mins)
Slides 1 & 2
Have students gather on the rug. Project Slide 2 (Weather Report) . Explain that feelings are like weather inside our bodies—they come and go, and all weather is okay!
Script: "Hello friends! Look at our weather board. Who can show me with their hands a sunny smile? How about rain? Just like we have sunny days and rainy days outside, we have sunny feelings and rainy feelings inside! Today we will learn that all weather inside us is okay."
Unit: Emotional Literacy Page 1 of 2 Lenny SEL Series
Phase 2: Story Time - The Color Monster (8 Mins)
Story Guide Sheet
Show a read-aloud video or read the physical book The Color Monster by Anna Llenas. Use the companion Color Monster Story Guide to pause and ask questions mapping yellow to happy, blue to sad, red to angry, and pink/green to surprised/calm.
Phase 3: Interactive Game - Feelings Charades (7 Mins)
Charades Cards
Use the printed Feelings Charades Cards . Draw a card and act out the feeling using only your body and face (no sounds!). Have the class guess. Then, call up individual student leaders or have everyone act out a selected feeling together at their spots.
Teacher Tip: Focus heavily on facial cues (furrowed brow for angry, wide eyes for surprised, downturned mouth for sad) to reinforce observational skills.
Phase 4: Guided Worksheet - My Emotion Jars (6 Mins)
Worksheet Jar
Distribute the student printable from the Color Monster Story Guide (Page 2). Guide students to select a color corresponding to their feeling right now and color in their main emotion jar, or draw things that go inside their jar.
Phase 5: Closing Circle & Breathing (4 Mins)
Slide 7
Gather in a circle. Introduce the "Balloon Breath" to soothe difficult feelings: inhale deeply to inflate an imaginary belly balloon, then exhale slowly to deflate with a soft "whoosh".
Validation Statement: "All my feelings are okay. Angry is okay. Sad is okay. Happy is okay. Surprised is okay. I can handle my feelings with a breath."
Differentiation
Support: Provide visual mirror tiles so students can see their own expressions while playing the charades game.
Extension: Challenge advanced students to identify why someone might feel surprised or sad, connecting feelings to actions.

Sadness

😢
Feeling Challenge!
"Show me what your face looks like when you sigh, and wrap yourself in a gentle hug."
❤️ All feelings are okay. Sadness is normal and it passes.

⚡ Red is Angry!
Anger
Angry feels hot, fast, and tight—like a mini volcano ready to erupt in your chest!
🌱 How can we cool down?
Taking deep breaths, squeezing a pillow, or sitting in a quiet, cozy corner.
😡
Feeling Challenge!
"Make an angry face, squeeze your hands into tight balls, then BLOW the steam out and relax!"
❤️ All feelings are okay. We don't hurt others when we are angry.
