Teacher Prep
"Anxiety is a physical alarm. To soothe it, kids need physical comfort."
Instructional Sequence
Phase 1: Spark Curiosity & Label Feelings 10 Mins
The Brave-Heart & Butterfly Connection
Ask students: "Have you ever felt butterflies flutter in your belly when arriving at school?" Validate that worries are normal physical alarms. Introduce the shield: an ancient tool used to protect our calm feelings inside.
Discussion Prompt: "What does your body do when it feels worried? (Tummy squeeze, fast heartbeat?)"
Phase 2: Guided Lesson β Core Strengths 15 Mins
The Four Quadrants of Courage
Use slides to show how a shield is divided into protective areas. Explain the four categories students will draw or write:
1. Calm Code A deep breath trick
2. Safe People Grownups you trust
3. Happy Place A happy memory
4. Brave Thought An "I can" statement

Part 2: Practice & Close
Phase 3: Creative Application β Shield Assembly 15 Mins
Crafting the Physical Shield
Hand out the Brave Heart Craft Activity. Lead students step-by-step through customizing their shield:
Coloring: Use comforting colors (blue for calm, yellow for joy).
Pasting Options: Have pre-printed pictures (heart, happy cloud, breathing spiral) for quick crafting.
Handle Attachment: Affix a large tongue depressor or craft stick to the back of the shield.
Phase 4: Synthesis & Social Integration 5 Mins
The Brave-Heart Knighting & Parade
Have students stand at their desks holding their completed shields. Lead them in a collective "Brave-Heart Pledge" to solidify their courage.
π‘οΈ The Brave-Heart Pledge π‘οΈ
"My heart is strong, my shield is near, / I have my friends, I have no fear.
When butterflies come fluttering through, / I know exactly what to do!"
Classroom Integration
Create a "Shield Stand". If a student arrives anxious, let them collect their shield to keep at their desk or hang on their cubby.
Differentiation
Support: Provide visual icon sheets to cut and glue rather than forcing written words.
Extension: Write descriptive words on the back.
Exit Ticket Suggestion
Observe during assembly: Can the child point to their safe person? Can they show their breathing? Use the Brave Heart Worksheet to check their understanding.
