Hearing "No" Feels Really Hard
Step 1: Understand
The Volcano Feeling
When you hear "No" or "Stop", your brain sounds a quick alarm. Your cheeks get hot, your hands clench, and you feel like screaming or crying.
Remember: Having mad or sad feelings is 100% normal and okay!
The Calm Captain Choice
Feelings are okay, but screaming, throwing, or hitting does not get you what you want. It just causes bigger problems.
The Secret: You are the boss of what your body does next.
Big feeling coming in? Let's use our 3-Step Reset Sequence!
The 3-Step Reset Sequence
The Formula
1
Freeze & Pause
Stop your body right away. Keep hands down and mouth closed for 3 seconds.
2
Cool the Engine
Take a deep belly breath or do a wall push to drop your energy back down.
3
Use Power Words
Ask for an alternative, request a wait timer, or say "Okay, maybe later."
Freeze → Cool Down → Power Words! That is how champions handle "No."
Body Station: 3 Physical Cool-Downs
Step 2: Practice
1. Balloon Breath
Inhale through nose filling your belly balloon (4s)... slow blow out through mouth (4s). Repeat 3 times.
Slows heart & brain
2. Wall Push Power
Put both flat palms against a sturdy wall. Push with all your muscle power for 7 seconds, then relax.
Releases muscle tension
3. Sensory 3-2-1
Spot 3 blue things you see, 2 textures you can touch, and 1 sound you can hear in the room right now.
Brings brain back to now
Which move is your favorite cool-down tool?
Power Words: What to Say Instead
Communication
Instead of screaming:
"THAT IS NOT FAIR!"
"I really wanted that. Can we plan it for tomorrow?"
Instead of demanding:
"GIVE IT TO ME NOW!"
"Can I have a turn in 3 minutes when you are done?"
Instead of crying on floor:
"I HATE THIS!"
"I feel overwhelmed. I need a 2-minute calm break."
Calm words make adults want to listen and help you!
The Waiting Game: How to Beat the Clock
Delayed Fun
Active Wait Tricks
Waiting is hard when you just stare at what you want. Give your brain a fun job while you wait:
Hum your favorite theme song in your head
Count backward from 30
Do 10 invisible finger taps on your knees
The Alternative Choice
When the answer is "No to X", find an exciting "Yes to Y":
🚫 No ice cream before dinner?
✅ "Can I pick which apple or berry snack we have now?"
Picking an alternative keeps the fun moving forward!
Every time you wait without a tantrum, your self-control muscle gets stronger.

Sometimes I Don't Get What I Want
I might want a toy, a snack, or screen time. But an adult says "No" , "Not now" , or "Please wait" .
It is natural to feel disappointed or surprised.
2
My Body Feels Like a Volcano
My heart beats fast, my hands make fists, and I feel like yelling or crying. This is my body signaling big anger.
Feelings are okay, but screaming does not help.
3
I Take My Power Pause
I freeze my hands and feet. I take 3 balloon breaths in through my nose and blow out slow. My engine cools down.
I am in control of my body.
4
I Use My Power Words
I say: "Can I have this after dinner?" or "Can I do a puzzle while I wait?" Adults are proud of my calm voice!
Calm words get me closer to good solutions.
My Daily Promise: When plans change, I freeze, breathe, and use power words.

Calm Coaching Facilitator Guide Adult Coaching & De-Escalation Guide
Responding to Meltdowns & Hearing "No"
Ages 6–10
Golden Rule: Connect Before Correct A child in fight-or-flight cannot access logic. First lower their physiological arousal through calm presence; teach coping scripts only once their nervous system returns to baseline.
The 4-Stage Response Protocol
1. Pre-Trigger Setup Before
Give a 2-minute warning before transitions. Use visual timers. Validate desires before delivering limits: "You love this game. In 2 minutes it is dinner time."
2. The Immediate Spike During Spike
Lower your voice pitch and volume. Keep body language open. Drop words to minimums: "I hear you. You are upset. I am right here while you breathe."
3. Physical Co-Regulation De-Escalation
Model deep belly breathing visibly. Offer high-proprioception input (wall pushes, tight bear hug, or squeezing a stress ball) without forcing.
4. Functional Debrief Post-Calm
Review the social story cards. Praise the reset: "You were super angry, but you paused and used your power words. That was champion self-control."
Caregiver Phrasing: What Escalates vs. What De-Escalates
❌ Avoid: "Stop crying right now, it's not a big deal!"
✅ Say: "It feels really big right now. I will help you hold that feeling."
❌ Avoid: "If you don't calm down, no iPad all week!"
✅ Say: "When your voice is calm, we can look at the weekend schedule."
❌ Avoid: "You are being ridiculous."
✅ Say: "You really wanted that. Let's pick an alternative from your menu."

Formula 1: "Yes, When..."
Instead of an absolute "No" which triggers resistance, frame boundaries conditionally:
• "Yes , we can go to the park when shoes are on."
• "Yes , you can have a cookie when lunch is finished."
Formula 2: "Yes, Instead..."
When the requested item is impossible, immediately pivot to two acceptable choices:
• "We can't watch a movie now, but instead do you want a board game or coloring?"
• "You can choose: blue cup or red cup."
