Session 1: Wise Mind & Mindfulness
50 Minutes
Core Mindfulness
Learning Objectives
• Differentiate between Emotional Mind, Reasonable Mind, and Wise Mind.
• Understand the core "What" (Observe, Describe, Participate) and "How" (Non-judgmentally) skills.
• Experience a somatic anchor breathing and 5-4-3-2-1 sensory grounding exercise.
Prep & Supplies
• Wise Mind Student Handouts
• Whiteboard / markers
• Chime or quiet bell
• Stress balls or grounding stones
Target Group Size: 4-8 Teens
Session Flow & Pacing
Time Segment Key Facilitator Actions & Focus 00-10 min Welcome & Group Agreements Establish confidential space, review group norms, brief icebreaker (1-word emotional weather report). 10-25 min Psychoeducation: The 3 Minds Draw overlapping circles (Emotion Mind vs Reason Mind). Contrast extremes; define Wise Mind as inner balance. 25-40 min Experiential Grounding Lab Lead 5-4-3-2-1 sensory scan and breath anchoring. Guide teens to complete Page 1 of student workbook. 40-50 min Debrief & Weekly Challenge Pair-share personal Wise Mind anchors. Assign weekly "Mindfulness Micro-Check" contract.
Emotion Mind
Driven entirely by intense feelings, urges, and mood. Facts are distorted; reactions are impulsive. "I feel it, so it is 100% true."
Reasonable Mind
Ruled solely by logic, facts, and cold calculations. Ignores emotional reality, values, and empathy. "Feelings do not matter, only data."
Wise Mind
The integration of reason and emotion. Intuitive inner knowing, calm clarity, and values-based decision-making. "I feel, I think, and I choose."

Facilitator Script & Discussion Architecture
Session 1 Clinical Toolkit
Guided Script: Dropping Anchor into Wise Mind (5 Min)
Read slowly, in a calm, grounded pacing with 3-5 second pauses at ellipses:
“Let your feet rest flat against the floor. Feel the solid ground pushing back beneath your shoes... Allow your shoulders to drop away from your ears... We are not trying to force your mind to go blank. We are simply dropping an anchor in the storm.”
“Look around the room without judging anything. Silently name 3 physical objects you see. Notice their textures and colors... Now bring attention to your ears: notice 2 distinct sounds inside or outside the room... Now notice 1 physical sensation —the fabric of your clothes, or the cool air entering your nostrils.”
“Place one hand on your chest or stomach. Take a slow inhale for four seconds... hold gently... and exhale smoothly for six seconds. Imagine reaching downward into that quiet center where wisdom lives. That center is always there, even when emotional storms swirl above.”
Guided Discussion Prompts for the Group
1. Spotting the Extremes:
“Think about the last 48 hours. Can someone share a moment when Emotional Mind took the steering wheel? What did it urge you to text, say, or do?”
2. The Pitfall of Pure Reason:
“Why can pure Reasonable Mind sometimes feel invalidating or disconnected when a friend is crying or when you're overwhelmed?”
3. Locating Wise Mind:
“What does Wise Mind feel like physically in your body? Is it a stillness in your chest, a clear head, or a deep breath?”
Clinical Roadblocks & Responsive Techniques
Teen: "I don't have a Wise Mind."
Validate that intense stress makes Wise Mind hard to hear. Frame it like the sun behind heavy storm clouds—it never disappears; it just needs grounding to be accessed.
Teen: "Mindfulness makes me more anxious."
Switch immediately from internal focus (breath/heartbeat) to external grounding (5-4-3-2-1 sensory scan, touching cold water, or squeezing an object). Eyes remain open.

Session Timeline & Protocol
Time Segment Facilitator Actions & Clinical Focus 00-10 min Check-in & Review Brief grounding anchor. Check in on teen STOP / TIPP practice during the week. 10-25 min The Anatomy of an Emotion Wave Explain: Trigger → Body Sensation → Urge → Action. Teach that fighting the wave makes it bigger ("what you resist persists"). 25-40 min Opposite Action Workshop Guide teens through identifying emotion urges (e.g., Sadness → Isolate; Fear → Avoid; Anger → Attack) and executing Opposite Action all-the-way. 40-50 min Debrief & Real-Life Rewrites Teens complete personal Opposite Action cards on Page 2 of workbook.
The Neurobiology of Emotion
A pure physiological emotional response lasts only 60 to 90 seconds in the body. Rumination, catastrophic thoughts, and fighting the feeling keep the wave crashing over and over.
Primary vs. Secondary Emotions
Primary: The initial vulnerable feeling (hurt, fear, sadness, rejection).
Secondary: The defensive reaction (anger, shame, sarcasm, shut-down).

Part 1: Primary vs. Secondary Emotion Unmasking
We often put on defensive armor to hide vulnerable feelings. Spot the difference:
🛡️ Secondary Armor (Outside): Defensive

• Sarcasm & "I don't even care"
• Giving the cold silent treatment
💎 Primary Core (Inside): Vulnerable
• Feeling rejected or left out
• Deep sadness or loneliness
• Fear of embarrassing myself

🔄 Rewire The Urge
🧠💡
How Opposite Action Rewires Brain Chemistry
When an emotion pushes you to do something unhelpful (like hiding in bed or screaming), doing the exact physical opposite sends a biological signal to calm the storm!
Step-by-Step Opposite Action Decision Guide
1 Name the emotion accurately (e.g., “I feel insecure and left out”).
2 Identify the urge: What does it want you to do? (e.g., “Isolate & avoid everyone”).
3 Check the Facts: Will following the urge make your life better or worse?
4 Execute Opposite Action All-The-Way: Change body posture, open curtains, speak softly.

In this expressive art piece, you will visually render an emotion wave: contrasting the stormy surface currents (secondary anger/shame) with the deep undercurrents (primary sadness/fear), and crowning it with an Opposite Action Ribbon .
