Voice Level Masters
Grade: Kindergarten
Objective
Identify & use voice levels 0-4
Target & Locations
Level 2: Blocks, Art, Centers
Duration
30-45 Minutes
Step 1
The Mystery Sparker (5 Mins)
Whisper to the class: "I have a giant secret. Only Level 1 voices can hear it..." Tell them they are now Sound Detectives! Introduce the Voice Level Chart (Levels 0 to 4) using the slide deck.
Step 2
Meet & Test Your Voices (10 Mins)
Teach the levels with hand gestures: Level 0 (Finger to lips), Level 1 (Hands cup mouth), Level 2 (Arms circle desk space), Level 3 (Arms wide), Level 4 (Point outside).
Detective Volume Self-Checks: • The Neck Vibration Check: Touch your throat! At Level 0, there is zero buzzing; at Level 1, there is a tiny bumblebee hum; at Level 2, there is a steady talking buzz!
• The Elbow Box Check: Put elbows on the desk. Keep your speaking voice strictly inside the "elbow box" so other tables can't hear.
Step 3
Gradual Release Play Practice (15 Mins)
• I Do (Model): Sit with blocks on the rug. Speak at Level 2 (Table Talk): "I will put this block here." Explain Why Voice Levels Matter:
1. Ear Hugs: Soft voices are like giving our friends' ears a gentle, warm hug!
2. Brain Calmers: It keeps our thinking brains calm and happy so we can make cool things.
3. Team Sharing: If we shout, our neighbors can't hear their own teams!
• We Do (Guided Practice): Call up 3 helpers to build a tower using Level 2 table voices. Have the seated class vote (thumbs up/down) on whether the helper group stays inside the green "Table Talk" zone.
• You Do (Independent Practice): Send all students to play stations with a "Level 2 Goal". Place Desk Cue Cards on tables. Reward tables maintaining a Level 2 volume with "Quiet Champion" points!
Step 4
Wrap Up & Sorting (10 Mins)
Gather students on the rug. Play the Sound Detective Sorting Game or complete the Student Practice Sheet together. Discuss: "Why is Level 2 perfect for building blocks together?"
Pro-Tips for Kinder Success
Sing the Scale: Practice ascending and descending scale volumes together: "1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 0..."
Interactive Correction: Instead of saying "Be quiet!", say "Show me a Level 2 voice."
Positive Peer Pressure: Praise the table that is doing it beautifully: "I love how Table 3 is playing nicely at Level 2!"

Observational Rubric
Formative
Use this rubric during small group activities to monitor, score, and guide students' voice volume modulation. Note students who need targeted visual reminders.
Skill Category Needs Support (1) Developing (2) Proficient (3) Identifying Levels Unable to name voice levels (0-4) even with poster support. Can identify and mimic levels when specifically prompted by teacher. Independently recognizes and names levels in classroom scenarios. Self-Regulation during Play Regularly uses level 3 or 4 during group work; requires constant redirecting. Uses correct level but needs occasional nonverbal cue cards to reset. Maintains Level 2 (Table Talk) volume throughout play sessions. Peer-Respect & Adjustments Ignores classmates asking them to speak softer or whisper. Adjusts voice only when teammate asks explicitly or teacher intervenes. Quickly adjusts level 2 voice if group indicates sound is too loud.

The Case of the Loud Blocks
Sound Detectives
🏫
Part 1: The Loud Classroom
Once upon a time, Room 4 was having free play. Max and Sam were building a tall block tower. Leo was painting a red bird. Everyone was talking, but they were talking too loudly! The sound bounced off the walls like bouncy balls! BOOM! CRASH! Nobody could hear their own friends, and everyone's ears began to hurt.
🕵️♂️
Part 2: The Sound Detectives
Just then, Miss Cooper blew her quiet whistle. "Freeze, Sound Detectives!" she said. Miss Cooper explained that our voices have magical numbers. When we are at play stations, we need to use Level 2: Table Talk! That means your voice is like a gentle blanket that only covers your own play table.
🧱
Part 3: The Table Blanket
Max and Sam tried it. Max leaned in close and whispered, "Can you pass me a square block?" Sam smiled and passed it. Their voices were soft and sweet. Leo could focus on his beautiful bird painting, and the classroom felt calm and cozy like a giant hug.

The Silent Ninja Mission
Sound Detectives
🏫
Part 1: The Tall Red Doors
Every day, the kids in Room 4 had to walk past three tall red classroom doors to get to the library. Some days, they stomped. Some days, they shouted about dinosaurs! "Wiggle wiggle! Look at my book!" they sang. But whenever they did, they saw busy older kids in the computer lab sigh and cover their ears.
🥷
Part 2: Marshmallow Boots
Miss Cooper called a team huddle. "Hallway Ninjas, are you ready for your silent mission?" she whispered. She gave everyone invisible, fluffy marshmallow boots. To walk quietly, they had to stay at Level 0: Silent Mouse! No voices, no hums, just soft marshmallow toes creeping across the tiles.
🎯
Part 3: Safe and Sound
They zipped their lips, blew giant mouth bubbles, and stepped into the hallway. Creep... creep... creep... they went. The hallway was completely silent! They marched past the computer lab. The teacher inside smiled and waved a silent thumb-up. The hallway ninjas had completed their silent mission perfectly!

Recess Voice Transition Lesson Guide • Recess Run Cheering
Outdoor Voice & Transitions
Grade: Kindergarten
Objective
Transition 4 to 0/2 volumes
Target & Locations
Level 4: Playground, Field
Duration
30-40 Minutes
Step 1
Meet Level 4 Outside! (10 Mins)
Gather students on the carpet. Explain that Level 4 (Outside Voice) is for running, playing tag, and cheering on the grassy field. It's too big and happy for our classroom walls, but it's perfect for outdoors!
Step 2
The Squeezed Sponge Check (10 Mins)
Explain the "vocal sponge" concept: we can absorb and hold loud noises inside ourselves when sitting indoors, and physically "squeeze out the sponge" when running on the grass so our throats get a happy release.
Step 3
Gradual Release Voice Transition (15 Mins)
• I Do (Model): Stand at the threshold door of the school. Model stepping across the door frame. While outside, cheer loudly at a Level 4. Step inside, look down, dial your imaginary chest button to 0, and walk silently.
• We Do (Guided): Play "The Voice Sponge" on the playground grass. Lead the class in jumping up and shouting (squeezing out the loud sponge). When the whistle blows, they immediately freeze and return to Level 0.
• You Do (Independent): Have students cross the "Magic Threshold" into the building line. Each student must dial down from a Level 4 outside to a silent Level 0 or a soft Level 2 table voice inside.
Transition Prompts
"Dial It Down": Have students mime a big turning knob on their collarbone, twisting it down from "4" to "2" or "0" while whispering "Click... click... click".
Squeeze and Release: Have students physically clench their fists tight to "hold the loudness" and release it into the sky before stepping indoors.

⚽
Part 1: Squeezing the Loud Sponge
When the recess bell rang, Leo sprinted out onto the green grass of the school soccer field. His throat was full of happy shouts! "PASS IT OVER HERE! KICK IT!" he screamed at Level 4. Miss Cooper smiled from the bench. She called it "squeezing out the loud sponge." Letting out loud shouts outside keeps our voices healthy and happy!
🧽
Part 2: The Sponge is Dry
Suddenly, the transition whistle blew. It was time to go inside. Leo's friend Ben was still yelling about soccer. Miss Cooper gathered the class at the school door threshold. "Recess runners, our loud sponges are empty and dry now. Time to dial your chest buttons down to a silent Level 0!"
🚪
Part 3: Crossing the Magic Door
Leo spun his imaginary collar dial: "Click... click... click... 0." He crossed the metal door frame. The hallway was peaceful and calm. Ben forgot to dial down and whispered loudly, but Leo put a finger to his lips. They walked back on marshmallow toes. Squeezing out the loudness outside let their brains focus beautifully inside!

Target & Locations
Level 2: Cafeteria Tables
Duration
30 Minutes
Step 1
The Noisy Echo Test (5 Mins)
Gather students around. Explain that the cafeteria is huge and loud, which makes our brains want to speak at a Level 3 or 4. But if we do, the room gets too noisy! The secret is staying at a Level 2 Table Talk voice.
Step 2
The Lean-In & Chewing Rules (10 Mins)
Teach kids the "lean-in" trick to restrict sound boundaries.
🥗 The Level 0 Chewing Safety Rule: Explain that when food is in our mouth, we must be at a Level 0 (Silent Voice) !
• Choking Danger: Talking with food inside our mouth can cause food to slip down into our windpipe, which is very dangerous!
• Manners: Table friends do not want to see chewed food spraying out!
Step 3
Gradual Release Cafeteria Chat (15 Mins)
• I Do (Model): Sit at a table. Model chewing silently (Level 0) with mouth closed. Swallow. Then lean in close to speak quietly at Level 2: "Can you please pass the apples?"
• We Do (Guided): Practice "Cozy Table Talk" on the rug with paper plates. Students take a bite of an imaginary cookie, chew silently at Level 0, swallow, and then share a favorite fruit at Level 2.
• You Do (Independent): Conduct real lunchroom practice. Use the "Green Cup Goal". Monitor students to ensure they are at Level 0 while chewing, and Level 2 while talking!
Lunchroom Success Cues
"Chew at Zero": Remind students of the rhyming chant: "Chew at Zero, Swallow fine, then Level 2 is Table time!"

Part 1: The Echoing Din
When Room 4 stepped into the big lunchroom, it was filled with noise! The background hum was huge. Ben sat down with his pizza slice. To ask Sam for some milk, he opened his mouth and yelled across the table: "HEY! PASS THE MILK!" at Level 3. Pizza crumbs sprayed onto Sam's tray! Sam made a sad face.
🤐
Part 2: The Double Lunchroom Rules
Miss Cooper came over and sat at their table. "My Sound Diners," she smiled, "we have a double rule for eating! When chewing food, mouths must be at Level 0 (Silence) to chew safely without choking. Once you swallow, you can talk at Level 2 (Table Talk) !"
😊
Part 3: Green Cups Up
Ben tried the double rule. He took a bite of pizza, chewed silently with closed lips at Level 0, and swallowed. Then, he leaned slightly forward over his tray and spoke softly at Level 2: "Can you please pass the milk, Sam?" Sam smiled, passed the milk, and their table cup stayed green-side up the entire lunch!
