Duration
45 Minutes
Required Materials
"Brain Driver Slides", "Driving Log Worksheet", colored pencils, pencils.
Lesson Procedures
01
The Hook: Passengers vs. Drivers (10 mins)
Open with Slide 1 & 2. Ask students: "What happens if you sit in the passenger seat of a car and try to travel to the park?" Discuss that passengers don't control the destination. Introduce the concept of being the "Brain Driver"—taking charge of where your heart, mind, and actions go (M 1).
02
Direct Instruction: The Dashboard System (15 mins)
Present Slides 3, 4 & 5. Explain Reacting (passenger brain, automatic, immediate) vs. Responding (driver brain, planned, intentional). Walk through the 3-Step Dashboard tool: Red Light (Stop/Breathe), Yellow Light (Think/Plan - B-LS 1), and Green Light (Steer/Act - B-SMS 1).
03
Guided Practice: Roadblock Scenarios (10 mins)
Use Slide 6 to guide students through the "No Recess Today!" or "Peer Disagreement" scenarios. Ask students to outline a Passenger choice versus a Driver choice. Encourage them to explain why a Driver choice shows responsibility (B-SMS 1).
04
Independent Practice: My Driving Log (10 mins)
Distribute the "My Driving Log" worksheet. Students complete their "Dashboard Check-in" and map out how they will navigate a real challenge using critical thinking. They close by signing the "Driving Pledge" to assume ownership of their actions.
Critical Discussion Questions
• "Why is it harder to use Driver Mind than Passenger Mind when we are angry?"
• "How does taking responsibility for a mistake help your 'whole self' grow?"
• "What are some real-life 'roadblocks' you encounter in 4th/5th grade?"

BRAIN DRIVER
Who is steering your choices, your actions, and your growth?
READY TO START YOUR ENGINE
The Big Question
Passenger or Driver?
PASSENGER BRAIN
Letting strong feelings, other people, or quick impulses steer your behavior. You react first and ask questions later.
"I couldn't help it! They made me do it!"
DRIVER BRAIN
Using critical-thinking skills to weigh your options. You stay calm, plan your turn, and accept responsibility for where you go.
"I'm in charge of my own steering wheel!"
Belief in development of whole self (ASCA M 1)
The Road Ahead
Beware of Road Hazards!
Strong Emotions
Anger, frustration, or fear can hijack your dashboard and make you react instantly.
Peer Pressure
Letting a friend's behavior or dynamic drive your vehicle instead of choosing your path.
Impulsive Speed
Making decisions in a rush without taking the time to read the road signs.
Critical-thinking skills to make decisions (ASCA B-LS 1)
The Dashboard
Your 3-Step Choice Dashboard
1
STOP & BREATHE
Hit your mental brakes immediately. Take one deep breath to lock up your passenger brain before reacting.
RED LIGHT
2
THINK & PLAN
Evaluate your road options: What are the consequences of each path? What is the smartest detour?
YELLOW LIGHT
3
STEER & ACT
Move forward. Take the responsible action and steer safely towards your positive growth goals.
GREEN LIGHT
Responsibility for self and actions (ASCA B-SMS 1)
Own Your Turn
The Power of Ownership
No Blame Steering
Driver brains don't blame the road, the weather, or other cars when they make a wrong turn. They take responsibility to fix it.
"How can I make it right?"
When You Make a Wrong Turn:
A
Acknowledge
Say honestly: "I made a mistake or a bad choice."
R
Repair
Take action to clean up, apologize, or make amends.
L
Learn
Plan a better route so you handle it better next time.
Taking responsibility for actions (ASCA B-SMS 1)

Part 1: Dashboard Self-Assessment
Think about how you steer your actions. Rate yourself honestly on these statements:
1. I take deep breaths to calm down when I feel upset.
Never
1 2 3 4 5
Always
2. I think about the consequences before making a choice.
Never
1 2 3 4 5
Always
3. I admit my mistakes and try to make them right.
Never

Always
Part 2: Steering Through a Personal Roadblock
Think of a real "roadblock" challenge you face at school (like a tough subject, a playground disagreement, or feeling left out). Apply the Dashboard system to steer safely.
My Roadblock is:
1. RED LIGHT (Stop/Breathe)
What is one healthy strategy you will use to calm down instantly?
2. YELLOW LIGHT (Think/Plan)
What are two different options you have to handle this situation?
3. GREEN LIGHT (Steer/Act)
What is the most responsible, positive choice you will choose to do?
THE SAFE DRIVING PLEDGE
I believe in the growth of my whole self. I agree to keep both hands on my choice steering wheel. If I make a steering mistake and hit a curb, I will own my action, make amends, learn a better route, and keep driving forward.

B-LS 1: Pausing to make a smart choice
B-SMS 1: Taking care of my own actions
Developmental Goal
Recognizing big feelings (Red/Yellow zone) and using concrete sensory actions to return to calm (Green zone).
Duration
30-40 Minutes
Core Materials
"Junior Drivers Slides", "Junior Driving License Coloring Sheet", crayons/markers.
Step-by-Step Activities
01
The Engine Hook: Vroom Vroom! (8 mins)
Have children pretend to steer an imaginary car around their seats. Say: "Vroom, we are driving! But oh no, a big red stop light appears!" Practice freezing. Explain that our brains have an "Engine" that sometimes runs too fast (mad, excited) and we must learn to be the safe Driver.
02
Direct Instruction: Red-Yellow-Green (12 mins)
Show Slides 3 & 4. Teach the 3 buttons: 🔴 STOP Button: Take a deep "balloon breath." 🟡 THINK Button: Ask, *"Is my choice safe or hurtful?"* 🟢 GO/ACT Button: Do the helpful action. Practice the balloon breath together twice.
03
Guided Practice: What Should the Driver Do? (10 mins)
Present Slide 5. Share two very simple scenarios: "Someone takes your blocks" or "Your crayon breaks." Lead the class in chanting: "Stop! Think! Choose!" Have children physically mime pressing their "Engine Stop" button (their nose or palm).
04
My Junior License Activity (10 mins)
Distribute the K-2 coloring worksheet. Students color their traffic light, draw a happy/calm face of themselves driving, trace their name on their "Junior Driving License," and receive a signature to validate their success.
Balloon Breathing Script (Sensory Cooldown)
"Put your hands on your head. Inhale slowly and grow your balloon hands big and wide above your head. Hold it... now let the air out with a quiet 'Whoooosh' as your hands float back down to your lap. Ahhh, feel your engine cool down!"
