Objective
Students will differentiate between external stressors and the internal stress response . By understanding that "solving the problem" is not the same as "completing the stress cycle," students will identify biological cues of incomplete stress and select evidence-based interventions to reset their nervous systems.

Facilitation Notes
1. Stressor vs. Stress
Crucial distinction for grad students who think "finishing the paper" is the same as "relaxing."
Explain that the stressor is the threat (deadline, PI critique, funding gap). The stress is the physiological cascade (cortisol, heart rate). Even if the stressor is gone, the body may still be "stuck" in the stress response.
2. Completing the Cycle
Based on Nagoski's biological research.
Present the 6 evidence-based ways to tell the body it is safe: Physical activity, Creative expression, Laughter, Affection (20-second hug), Deep Breathing, and Progressive Muscle Relaxation.
3. The Gradient of Burnout
Address the "Normalization of Suffering" in academia.
Facilitate a discussion on how grad culture often praises "incomplete cycles" as a sign of dedication. Challenge students to reframe "completing the cycle" as high-performance maintenance rather than "taking a break."
