Teacher Facilitation Guide: Sessions 1–16
Teacher Resource
How to Use These Scripts
These scripts provide word-for-word guidance for the instructional portion of each session. While you should adapt the language to fit your personal style and your students' developmental levels, the core concepts and DBT terminology should remain consistent.
Module 1: Mindfulness
Session 1: Settle Like Glitter Mindfulness Intro
"Today we're going to talk about a superpower called Mindfulness. Mindfulness is just a big word for 'paying attention to right now' on purpose. Look at this jar. When I shake it, the glitter goes everywhere, right? That’s like our brains when we have a lot of thoughts or big feelings. It’s hard to see clearly. But look what happens when we set the jar down and just... watch. The glitter slowly settles to the bottom. The water gets clear. Our minds can do that too when we slow down and breathe. Today, we’re going to make our own glitter jars and practice settling our minds."
Session 2: Bubble Breath Calm Breathing
"Last week we saw how things settle when we stay still. Today, we’re using bubbles to help us breathe. To blow a perfect bubble, you can’t breathe too fast or too hard, or it will pop! We have to breathe in slowly to fill our tummies, then blow out very gently. Watch me... I take a deep breath in through my nose, and blow out long and slow through my mouth. See the bubble? That slow breath tells our body, 'It’s okay, we are safe and calm.' Let's try to blow the biggest, slowest bubbles together."
Session 3: Sensory Anchor Hunt The 5 Senses
"Sometimes our minds wander to the past (thinking about what happened at recess) or the future (worrying about a test). To bring our minds back to 'Right Now,' we use our five senses as anchors. Like an anchor keeps a boat from drifting away, our senses keep our minds from drifting away. What do you see right now? What can you hear? We’re going on a scavenger hunt to notice small things that we usually miss. This helps us stay grounded and calm."
Session 4: Wise Mind Balance Core Mindfulness
"We have three parts to our mind. Head Mind is where we keep facts and logic—like 2+2=4. Heart Mind is where our big feelings live—like being super excited or very angry. Both are important! But when we use them together, we find our Wise Mind. Wise Mind is that quiet voice inside that knows the right thing to do. It’s the balance between what we think and what we feel. Today we’re going to practice finding that middle spot where we feel both smart and kind."
Module 2: Distress Tolerance
Session 5: Calm Box Toolkit Self-Soothing
"Sometimes feelings get so big they feel like a storm. When that happens, we need a toolkit to help us feel safe. This is our Calm Box. Everything inside is meant to help our senses feel better. Maybe a soft fabric to touch, a smell that makes us happy, or a stress ball to squeeze. When the storm comes, you don't have to think about what to do—just open your box and use what helps you. Let’s start picking our favorites."
Glitter Jar Visualization Worksheet Glitter Jar Visualization
Session 1: Mindfulness Basics
Name:
Date:
Shake your jar and watch the glitter swirl. As the glitter slowly settles, follow the steps below to notice how your mind and body feel.
1 Before You Shake
How do you feel right now? Write or draw your current mood and how your body feels.
2 Draw Your Jar
Sketch your jar below. Show where the glitter starts and where it lands when it's still.
3 Notice Your Thoughts
What words or images pop into your mind?
4 Tune into Your Body
Where do you feel calm or tight? Any changes?
5 After the Glitter Settles
When the glitter stops moving, take a deep breath in and out.
How would you describe your mood now?
Reflection
When could you use your glitter jar in your day? List two moments:
Keep this near your jar!

Group Glitter Jar Practice Activity Guide Group Glitter Jar Practice
Session 1 Activity Guide
Time 30 Min
Use this guided group activity to practice the glitter jar mindfulness exercise together. Students will observe, reflect, and share insights in pairs and as a full group.
Materials
Glitter jars (one per student)
Visualization Worksheets
Timer
Clipboards & pencils
Key Theme
"Noticing small changes in our mind and body helps us practice mindfulness every day."
Activity Timeline
5m
1. Setup & Introduction
Gather students in a circle. Remind them of today’s goal: practice noticing thoughts, feelings, and body sensations as the glitter settles. Distribute jars and worksheets.
5m
2. Glitter Jar Observation
Ask everyone to complete Step 1 (“Before You Shake”) on their worksheet. At the count of three, shake jars together. Set timer for 2 minutes of silent observation.
5m
3. Individual Reflection
Invite students to finish Steps 2–5 on their worksheets while observing the jar again if needed. Focus on thoughts and body sensations.
7m
4. Pair Share
Pair students up. Provide prompts: What was your biggest “wow” moment? Where did your body feel calm or tense? How did your mood shift?
5m
5. Whole-Group Debrief
Reconvene circle. Ask 3–4 volunteers to share one insight. Reinforce the concept of the mind "settling" just like the jar.
3m
6. Closure & Next Steps
Take three deep, slow breaths together. Remind students to keep their worksheets and jars for future use in their Calm Box.
Teacher Note
If students struggle with 2 minutes of silence, start with 30 seconds and gradually increase over sessions. Provide a visual timer to help them see how much "observation time" is left.

2
Pause
Hold your breath for just a second. Get your bubble wand ready (imagine it!).
3
