Tier 3 CBT Intervention // Sequence Overview
Teacher Resource
Intervention Mission
Mind Mechanics is a targeted Tier 3 intervention designed for intensive support. It focuses on the Cognitive Triangle : the concept that our thoughts about a situation dictate our emotional response, which then drives our behavioral actions. For students in Tier 3, this sequence provides the high level of scaffolding and visual support needed to build self-regulation and cognitive flexibility.
Key Terms
Blueprint: The mental map of thoughts, feelings, and actions.
Trap Thought: An unhelpful or "stuck" thought (Automatic Negative Thought).
Helper Swap: A realistic, helpful replacement thought.
Sequence Roadmap
1
The Thought Triangle: Identification
Focus on labeling the three components. Use the Mind Blueprint Anchor Chart to introduce the flow (Thoughts → Feelings → Actions). Use the Mood Meter to expand feeling vocabulary beyond "mad/sad".
Worksheet: Thought Trace
2
Scenario Sleuths: Application
Applying the model to others before self. Students act as detectives to find missing links in a chain. This builds the foundational skill of objective observation before asking them to analyze their own difficult emotions.
Worksheet: Case Files
3
Flip the Script: Change
Cognitive restructuring. Introduce the "Thought Swap." Students practice finding a Helper Swap that is believable , not just "happy." Emphasize that a new thought creates a new feeling.
Worksheet: Thought Swap
Implementation Strategies
Tier 3 Scaffolding
Hand-over-hand modeling: Fill out the first scenario on every worksheet together.
Visual Referencing: Keep the Mind Blueprint Anchor Chart visible during all independent work.
Choice Boards: If a student is stuck on "The Feeling," point to the Mood Meter and ask "Is it Red or Blue energy?"
Facilitation Prompts
"What was the very first thing that popped into your head when that happened?"
"If you thought [X] instead, would you still feel [Y]?"
"Where do you feel that [feeling] in your body right now?"

Teacher Tool
Our Mission
Mind Mechanics Junior helps our youngest learners understand that their "Brain Talk" (thoughts) is what makes their heart feel different ways. For Tier 3 support, we focus on externalizing thoughts as "Sunny" or "Cloudy" to make the abstract concept of CBT concrete and manageable.
K-2 Concepts
Brain Talk = Thoughts
Heart Feelings = Emotions
Cloudy = Unhelpful
Sunny = Helpful
Junior Roadmap
1
The Thinking Circle
Introduction to Brain Talk
Use puppets or a stuffed animal to model "Brain Talk." Have the animal say "I can't do it!" and ask the kids how the animal's heart feels. Then swap for "I'll try again!" and see the heart change.
2
Thought Detectives
Finding the Missing Link
K-2 students struggle with inference. Provide the "Clue" and help them "act out" the missing feeling. Use the Mood Monsters chart as a visual menu to help them pick the right monster for the story.
3
Sunny Swaps
Changing the Story
Focus on the physical change. "When we say our Sunny Thought, what does our body do? Does it stand taller? Does it smile?" Reinforce that Sunny Thoughts aren't just "happy," they are "helpful."
Tier 3 Scaffolding for K-2
Drawing as Language
Many Tier 3 K-2 students have limited verbal or writing skills. Accept drawings for every answer. If they draw a storm cloud for a feeling, that is a successful identification of an unpleasant emotion.
Echo Modeling
Have students echo the "Sunny Swaps" out loud. The auditory reinforcement of saying a helpful thought helps "sticky" the concept in their brains during high-stress moments.
The "Brain Talk" Script
"I hear your Brain Talk saying something cloudy right now. Is it saying that you're 'not good' at this?"
"If your Brain Talk said 'I'm learning this,' how would your heart feel then?"
"Let's look at our Mood Monsters. Which one is visiting your heart right now?"
