05:00 - 15:00
(10 Mins)
Counselor Mini-Lesson: Credit Anatomy & GPA

Facilitator Script & Implementation Guidelines
Lesson 1: Credit Awareness
Counselor Talking Track: Hook & Opening (Minutes 0–5)
"Good morning, Freshmen! When you were in 8th grade, if you got a D or an F in May, what happened in August? You still walked into high school. But high school has a completely different rulebook. In high school, you don't earn grade levels just by having a birthday; you earn them by accumulating credits. Today in 30 minutes, we are going to unlock the secret mechanics of your high school transcript so you control your future instead of being surprised by it."
Core Concepts Counselor Must Reinforce (Minutes 5–15)
The Credit Currency
1 Semester Class = 0.5 Credits.
7 classes/semester = 3.5 credits.
Yearly target = 7.0 credits.
Total needed to graduate = 24.0. If you fail a class, that credit disappears.
GPA Math Reality
A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0.
A single 1.5 GPA in 9th grade requires straight A's for the next 3 semesters just to reach a 2.75! It's math, not magic. Protect it now.
The On-Track Metric
Research shows freshmen who earn all credits in 9th grade are 3.5 times more likely to graduate on time than students who fail even one core credit.
Activity Facilitation Guide: Transcript Detective (Minutes 15–25) Partner Work
Distribute the Student Jordan vs. Student Alex case study card. Give students 6 minutes to calculate Jordan's Q1 GPA (3 B's, 1 C, 1 F) vs Alex's (4 B's, 2 C's). Ask students to identify what Jordan must do immediately before semester exams.
Counselor Prompt During Circulation: "Notice Jordan's Algebra 1 grade is a 58%. If that becomes a final semester F, how many credits will Jordan earn this semester? What does Jordan have to give up next summer to retake it?"
Differentiation & EL/IEP Supports
- Provide translated transcript glossaries (Spanish/district dominant languages).
- Use visual credit bar charts showing colored blocks filling up toward 24.
- Pair striving readers with peer mentors for case study audit.
Counselor Tier 2 Follow-Up Triggers
- Flag any student currently with 2+ D/F grades on Q1 progress reports.
- Flag students who express anxiety or confusion about credit totals on exit ticket.
- Schedule 10-minute check-ins for students without an identified teacher advocate.
Exit Ticket Questions (Administer via Paper Slip or Google Form) Minutes 25–30
1. Check: How many credits are required to graduate in our high school, and how many are earned per passed semester course?
2. Application: If a student finishes 9th grade with 4.0 credits instead of 6.0, what grade classification are they in next fall?
3. Action: Name one teacher or school staff member you will talk to this week about your current academic standing.
