Program Mission
The DBT Group curriculum is designed to equip middle school students with the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills necessary to navigate the turbulent waters of adolescence. By framing these skills as "group tools" and "life experiments," we reduce stigma and increase engagement with mental health concepts.

Group Assessment Protocol
Progress in the DBT Group is not measured by letter grades, but by the "Weekly Reflection Log" and "Skills Generalization" in the real world. Use the following rubric to track student development over the 13-week curriculum:
Beginner
Can name the skill, but struggles to explain when or how to use it independently. Workbook completion is inconsistent or superficial.
Practitioner
Explains skills accurately and attempts to utilize them in classroom scenarios. Weekly logs are over 80% complete and show active reflection.
Leader
Uses skills spontaneously during real-world stress or social conflict. Actively teaches peers. Workbook is comprehensive and highly detailed.

Assessment Scoring Guide
Teacher Answer Key
Skill Area Level 1 (Developing) Level 2 (Proficient) Level 3 (Mastery) Content Knowledge Vague or incomplete definitions of skills. Accurately defines the skill and its core purpose. Provides clear examples and concrete implementation steps.
Q1: Dialectics
Desired Outcome: Understanding that two opposite truths can coexist.
"I can be doing my best AND I can still have more to learn." Look for the use of "AND" vs. "BUT" and the recognition of non-polarized (black-and-white) thinking.
Q2: Wise Mind
Desired Outcome: Distinction between Reason, Emotion, and Intuition.
Reasonable Mind = facts/logic only. Emotion Mind = feelings/impulses only. Wise Mind = the balance/overlap that feels "just right" and integrates both data points.
Q3: Judgment vs. Fact
Desired Outcome: Ability to Describe objectively.
Facts are what a camera can capture. Judgments are labels (good/bad, mean/nice). High-scoring answers provide a specific example of rewriting a judgment into a fact.
Q4: DEAR MAN
Desired Outcome: Objective Effectiveness.
Look for "Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce." Mention of confidence and staying mindfully focused on the goal (Broken Record style).
Q5: FAST
Desired Outcome: Self-Respect Effectiveness.
Being Fair, making no over-Apologizing, Sticking to values, being Truthful. Key indicator: recognizing that they don't need to lie or feel guilty to say "No".
Q6: Identifying Emotions
Desired Outcome: Interoceptive awareness.
Anger = heat, muscle tension. Fear = rapid heart rate, shaking. Sadness = heavy limbs, crying. Key indicators help catch the emotion before it escalates.
Q7: PLEASE Skill
Desired Outcome: Reducing biological vulnerability.
Sleep, nutrition, exercise, avoiding substances, treating illness. Acknowledgment that body maintenance is the baseline for emotional control.
Q8: Opposite Action
Desired Outcome: Emotion regulation through behavioral change.
Checking if the emotion "fits the facts." If not, acting 100% contrary to the emotional urge (Fear -> Approach; Anger -> Gently Avoid).
Q9: STOP & TIPP
Desired Outcome: Crisis survival.
STOP (Stop, Take a breath, Observe, Proceed). TIPP (Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, Paired muscle relaxation).

The Core Idea
"I can be doing my best AND I need to improve." - Two opposite things can be true at the same time.
"AND" Thinking
Analyze the situations below. Formulate the "Middle Path" for each:
Scenario A: You failed a math test, but you studied for three hours.
Scenario B: You are angry at your parents about a rule, but you know they love you.

Intense Exercise
Burn off stress chemicals by doing 60 seconds of jumping jacks, running in place, or wall-sits at maximum effort.
P
Paced Breathing
Calm your central nervous system down: Inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 or 8. Make the exhale longer than the inhale.
P
Paired Muscle Relaxation
Tense each muscle group (shoulders, hands, legs) as tight as you can for 5 seconds, then release and notice the "letting go" sensation.

Instructions: Please answer the following questions as completely as possible. If you are not sure of an answer, it is okay to say "I don't know yet." We want to see what you have learned!
1. Explain what it means for two opposite things to be true at the same time.
2. Describe the difference between making a decision using your "Reasonable Mind" compared to your "Wise Mind."
3. What is the difference between a "fact" and a "judgment" or interpretation?
DBT Group Skills Assessment // Page 2
4. If you need to ask someone for something important, what are the best steps to ensure you are heard and respected?
5. How can you say "No" to a friend while maintaining your self-respect and staying true to your values?
6. How can physical sensations (like heart rate or body temperature) help you identify which emotion you are feeling?
DBT Group Skills Assessment // Page 3
7. List three things you can do to take care of your body so your emotions do not feel as overwhelming.
8. When you feel a strong urge to do something unhelpful (like yelling or hiding), how can you choose an action that changes that emotion?
9. Explain a specific set of steps you can take during a "crisis" moment to stop yourself from doing something impulsive.
DBT Group Skills Assessment // Final Page
10. Describe what it means to "Radically Accept" a situation that you really do not like and cannot change.

ACCEPTANCE
Exp 13 // Radical Acceptance
Module: Distress Tolerance
LAB-PROTO: 13-RADICAL
The Definition
Group Protocol
"Accepting reality as it is, without fighting it, avoiding it, or judging it."
It doesn't mean...
That you LIKE it, that you APPROVE of it, or that you won't ever try to change things in the future.
It does mean...
Stopping the inner argument that "this shouldn't be happening."
