The Surface Scan (10 min)
Use the slides to show photos of diverse individuals. Ask: "What can we 100% KNOW just by looking at this person?" (Hair color, clothes, height). Then ask: "What do we NOT know?" (Fears, family, music taste, their day so far).

Deep Sea Mapping (20 min)
Distribute the Iceberg Profile Worksheet . Students fill out the surface and submerged levels for themselves. Encourage them to go deep—what makes them uniquely them? Remind them that they only have to share what they feel comfortable with.

Structural Reflection (15 min)
End with a group discussion on the reflection question. Why does a "blueprint" for a community need to account for the submerged parts? (Example: If we only see a student's "laziness," we might miss their "hidden stress" at home).

Use the slides to introduce the "Authority Gap." Be vulnerable: share something about yourself that students wouldn't expect (e.g., your favorite video game, a weird snack preference). Ask: "Why is it surprising that I like [X]?"

Hand out the Common Ground Blueprint Worksheet . Have students fill out their "Me" circle first. Then, conduct a "Mingle" activity where they walk around to music. When the music stops, they find a partner and look for one "Anchor" (shared trait) to write in the center.

Return to desks. Discuss the "Authority Gap" scenario on the worksheet. Focus on how knowing a teacher likes the same movie can make it easier to ask for help when you're struggling.

Pro-Builder Tip
Avoid the temptation to correct their "Pillars" to match your pre-existing rules. If they say a pillar of the class should be "Freedom," ask them to define what that looks like in a way that supports everyone's learning. Let them do the heavy lifting of defining the boundaries.

Use the slides to contrast "Fuel" vs. "Wrecking Balls." Ask: "When was a time someone told you something you were doing wrong, and it made you want to quit? How could they have said it differently so you wanted to keep going?"

Teach the 3 layers: The Base (Positive observation), The Fill (Specific repair/adjustment), and The Top (Affirmation glue). Model this using a classroom routine, like "Turning in papers."

Hand out the Feedback Fuel Log . Students practice writing a sandwich for the messy logo scenario. Then, have them trade worksheets and "review the feedback." Was the middle layer clear? Did the top layer feel genuine?
Fuel Calibration Tip
The most common mistake is the "But" bomb. "You did great, BUT..." This cancels out the base. Teach students to use "and" or just start a new sentence. "You did a great job on the colors. One adjustment we can make is the handwriting size." This keeps the positive and constructive signals separate.

Safety Tip
