Brain HQ Intro
Meet Your Brain Team & Learn to Lead Your Feelings
The Goal: Regulation
Emotion Regulation is being the Boss of your feelings.
It doesn't mean "never getting upset." It means knowing how to steer through big feelings.
The Brain Boss Motto
"I can feel it all, but I choose what I do."
🌊
Feelings are like Waves
You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf!
The Team Roles
Update Required: Some parts still loading!
Amygdala
"THE ALARM"
Full power! Fast, loud, and jumpy. It’s been ready since you were born.
Work in Progress
PFC
"THE WISE LEADER"
This part is still **Under Construction**! It takes time to get strong. It needs your help to wake up.
Hippo
"THE LIBRARIAN"
Organizes memories and reminds you what happened before.
The Power Imbalance
The Amygdala is a Pro.
It's fast and strong. It has been practicing since the day you were born!
The PFC is a Rookie.
It is still growing. It isn't as fast or strong as the alarm yet. **That is why we practice!**
"Be patient with your PFC. It’s working hard to catch up!"

WEEK 01 // BRAIN TEAM & CONSTRUCTION STATUS
Agent Name
Mission Date
Welcome to Brain HQ! Today you meet your team. Remember: one of them is a PRO , and one is a ROOKIE still in training.
The Pro
AMYGDALA
"THE ALARM"
Job: Watches for danger and feelings. Reacts FAST .
The Rookie
PFC
"THE WISE LEADER"
Construction Status: Loading...
HIPPO
"THE LIBRARIAN"
Job: Stores memories. Remembers what helps.
Mission Strategy: Rookie Support
1. When I have a HUGE feeling, my PRO Amygdala reacts instantly. What is one thing I can do to give my ROOKIE PFC (Wise Leader) time to wake up?
2. My PFC is "Under Construction." This means when I make a mistake, I can say to myself:
"It's okay, my Leader is still ___________________________."
"Regulation is a team effort. Be patient with your Rookie Leader—it's working hard to catch up!"

Construction Status: IN PROGRESS
Tier 2 Intervention
Mission Objective
Students will identify the Brain HQ team and acknowledge that while the Amygdala is a "Pro," the Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) is a "Rookie" that is still under construction.
The Realistic Approach
At this age, the Amygdala (Alert Center) is fully developed, but the PFC (Wise Leader) won't be "finished" until around age 25. We must validate that **regulation is physically harder for them** than for adults.
HQ Status
AMYGDALA: The "Pro" Guard. Fast, loud, and 100% online since birth.
PFC: The "Rookie" Leader. Slow, still loading, and currently under construction.
Mission Protocol
01
The Power Imbalance (10 min)
Introduce the concept: "Your Amygdala is like a pro athlete—it's fast and strong. But your PFC is like a rookie player. It's still learning the rules of the game."
"If you struggle to stay calm, it's not because you're 'bad.' It's because your PFC hasn't finished building yet!"
02
Meet the Team (10 min)
Use the Brain HQ Slides . Highlight the "Under Construction" icons on the PFC slides.
Amygdala: Fast and reactive. Protective but loud.
PFC: The part that **regulates**. It's currently in a construction zone.
Hippo: The librarian who remembers that practice helps construction go faster.
03
Construction Check (10 min)
Distribute the HQ Mission Log . Focus on the "Strategy" section.
Self-Compassion Prompt:
"When your rookie leader (PFC) makes a mistake, what can you say to yourself to keep going?"

Body Highway Worksheet Body Highway Scan
MISSION LOG: WEEK 02 // NERVOUS SYSTEM MAPPING
Agent Name
When your Amygdala rings the alarm, it slams on the Gas Pedal! This sends messages down your Body Highway. Where do you feel the energy in your body?
Scanner Active: Circle where you feel the GAS
Gas Pedal Signals
Heart beating faster
Butterflies in my stomach
Sweaty palms or forehead
Tightly clenched fists or jaw
Face feels warm or flushed
The Brake System
A "Brain Boss" uses their Brakes to balance the energy. What is one thing you can do to slow down your Highway traffic? (Example: Take 3 deep breaths, count to 10...)
Body Highway Slides Network Link Established...
The Body Highway
Connecting Your Feelings to Your Body
Emotional Traffic
Big feelings send **FAST** messages down your Body Highway.
If you don't slow down the traffic, your PFC (Leader) can't see the road!
Traffic Control Strategy

Feeling = Energy
The Power of the Brakes
The Gas
Emotions like **Anger, Worry, or Frustration**.

Body Highway Facilitator Guide
Paving in Progress
Topic: Nervous System
Mission Objective
Students will understand that the connection between brain and body (the highway) is still being "paved," which makes regulation take longer than reactive impulses.
The Science of Delay
Because their neurons are still undergoing myelination (insulation), signals from the Amygdala reach the body instantly, while signals from the PFC take a "dirt road." **We teach tools to pause and wait for the PFC to arrive.**
Traffic Log
PRO GUARD (AMY): Has a high-speed express lane to the "Gas Pedal."
ROOKIE LEADER (PFC): Is still building its lane to the "Brakes."
Execution Protocol
01
The Dirt Road (5 min)
"Why is it so easy to yell but so hard to stop and think?"
Explain: "It's because the path to the Gas Pedal is a paved highway, but the path to the Brakes is still a bumpy dirt road. We are here to help you start paving!"
02
Paving the Brakes (15 min)
Present the Body Highway Slides . Emphasize that the "Brake" signals are slower right now.
"Since the Brakes are slower, a Brain Boss has to start using them **AS SOON** as they notice the Gas Pedal. Don't wait until the car is racing!"
03
The Pause (10 min)
Hand out the Body Highway Worksheet . Ask: "Where can you add a 'Stop Sign' on your highway to give your PFC time to catch up?"

Neuro Network Worksheet Network Upgrade
MISSION LOG: WEEK 03 // BRAIN UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Agent Name
Between 3rd and 5th grade, your brain is doing a MASSIVE upgrade! You can choose which paths to make fast (Myelin) and which to prune away.
Fast-Track Paths
Skills I want my brain to wrap in Myelin:
Taking deep breaths when upset
Asking for a break

Paving the Road
Help Your Rookie Leader
Since the PFC is a rookie, it needs **LOTS** of reps. Every time you practice your "Brakes," you are paving the road with **Myelin**.

Practice regulation when you are CALM so it's ready when you are ANGRY.
Building Connections...

Neuro Network Facilitator Guide
Zone: Long Build
Topic: Development
Mission Objective
Students will understand that their brain is in a "Long Build" phase (until age 25) and that every act of regulation acts as a software update and hardware paving (Myelin) for their PFC.
The "Rookie" Reality
The PFC's thin myelination at this age means impulse control is physically slower. We must emphasize that **repeated practice while CALM** is the only way to pave the road for when they are dysregulated.
Dev Stats
AGE 8-11: Peak "Plasticity." The brain is most ready to build new regulation habits.
AGE 25: PFC Construction officially finishes.
Construction Protocol
01
The Long Build (5 min)
"How many years until you are 25? That's how many years your Wise Leader still has to grow. You are currently in the most exciting part of the build!"
02
Paving the Path (15 min)
Present the Neuro Network Slides . Use the "Head/Stomach" challenge to demonstrate "thin paths."
"Every time you take a deep breath instead of yelling, you're adding a layer of Myelin. You're building a regulation armor for your rookie leader."
03
Paving Plan (10 min)
Hand out the Network Upgrade Worksheet . Identify the specific "Regulation Path" they want to pave this week.

Lid Lifters Worksheet Security Scan
MISSION LOG: WEEK 04 // LID LIFTER DETECTION
Agent Name
When your Amygdala rings the alarm, your Wise Leader can "Flip Their Lid." Catching your signals EARLY helps you stay a Brain Boss!
My Flip Triggers
Things that make me want to flip my lid:
Getting a wrong answer
Someone being mean
Feeling left out
Early Warning Signals
How my body warns me before the flip:
Warm or red face
Tight fists or chest
Stomach ache
Fast, loud voice
HQ Defense Plan

What to do when HQ goes Offline
The Weak Hinges
In a grown-up brain, the "hinges" holding the lid down are strong.
In your brain, those hinges are still **thin and soft**. That’s why your lid flips so much faster!
The Truth
"It isn't your fault that your lid flips. It's just how your brain is growing right now."
🤯
Lid Status: SENSITIVE
The "hinges" get stronger every time you practice a tool.
The Action: The Pause
Hold the Hinges
Since your PFC is a "Rookie," it needs **TIME** to react. When you feel a flip coming, you must **PAUSE** to let the PFC catch up.
Count to 10 before speaking.
Use the "Hand Model" to check your status.

Lid Lifters Facilitator Guide
Lid Hinges: SOFT
Topic: Awareness
Mission Objective
Students will understand the "Hand Model" of the brain and recognize that their "lid" flips easier because their PFC hinges are still developing.
The Hinge Metaphor
A lid flip happens when the PFC loses its grip on the Amygdala. At this age, the connection (hinge) is physically weak. **We remove the shame by explaining this as a growth stage.**
Security Check
A flipped lid = zero logic. Coaching must focus on waiting for the hinges to cool down.
Security Protocol
01
The Soft Hinges (10 min)
Teach the Hand Model: Thumb (Amygdala) in palm, fingers (PFC) folded over.
"In a grown-up, the hinges are steel. In you, they are like soft tape. They pop open easily! That's not your fault, it's just your construction stage."
02
Signal Detection (10 min)
Use Lid Lifters Slides . Discuss "Early Warning Signs."
"Since the hinges are soft, you have to catch the flip early. What does your body feel like 10 seconds BEFORE the lid flies off?"
03
The Pause Rule (10 min)
Distribute the Security Scan Worksheet . Emphasize the "10-Second Pause" as the tool to let the rookie PFC get back in position.

Status: Master in Training
Topic: Integration
Mission Objective
Students will synthesize their learning and accept their certification as "Brain Bosses in Training," acknowledging that their HQ is still growing but they now have the manual to operate it.
The Certification Mindset
Ending on a note of realism: "You are now a certified Operator of your HQ. Even if you make mistakes, you know how to get back on track. Your PFC will keep growing, and you know how to help it!"
Final Protocol
Construction continues for 15 more years. The goal is consistent use of tools, not a perfect record.
Certification Protocol
01
The Manual (10 min)
"Even professional pilots have an operator's manual. Today, you are writing the manual for your own brain."
Review the roles: Amygdala (Fast), PFC (Learning), Hippo (Storage).
02
The Oath (10 min)

Duration: 30 Minutes
Topic: Skill Installation
Mission Objective
Students will practice and "install" specific emotion regulation tools (Square Breathing, 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding) to build the neuro-pathways (Myelin) needed for quick access during dysregulation.
The ER Concept
Regulation is a skill , not a personality trait. Just like a sports skill or a video game, you have to "install" it through repetition while the brain is in a calm state.
Tech Terms
SQUARE BREATH: A physiological tool to force the body highway into "Brake" mode.
GROUNDING: A cognitive tool to pull the Wise Leader (PFC) back online.
Installation Protocol
01
Signal Check (5 min)
Review last week's "Lid Flippers."
"Last week we found our early warning signals. Today, we are downloading the software to use when those signals start flashing."
02
Tool Trials (15 min)
Use the Regulation Station Slides . Focus on active participation:
Square Breathing: Lead 4 cycles. "Can you feel your body city slowing down?"
5-4-3-2-1: Have students name items quietly to themselves. "Is your Wise Leader starting to focus on the room instead of the feeling?"
03
The Toolbox (10 min)
