School Success Handout
The School Connection
Building a path to confidence and attendance.
Understanding School Avoidance
It is normal for students to feel "butterflies" before a big test or a new school year. However, school phobia (or school refusal) is an intense emotional distress about attending school. Early intervention is the most effective way to prevent chronic absenteeism and help your child feel safe and capable.
Morning Momentum
-
Prepare the Night Before: Reduce morning friction by picking out clothes, packing bags, and making lunches before bed.
-
Predictable Routine: Follow the same steps in the same order every day. Routine builds a sense of safety and predictability.
-
Stay Calm and Concise: Use "when-then" statements. "When you get your shoes on, then we can listen to your favorite podcast in the car."
Firm but Supportive
Show empathy for their feelings while remaining firm on the expectation of attendance.
Validate Feelings
"I can see you're feeling worried today, and it's okay to feel that way. We're going to work through it together."
Make Staying Home "Boring"
If staying home is necessary for health, the day should be restful but not entertaining. No screens, video games, or special snacks.
Partnering with School
Schools have specialized staff and systems to help students transition back into the classroom. You don't have to do this alone.
-
Contact the Counselor: They can arrange for a "safe person" to greet your child or a "calm-down spot" they can visit if they feel overwhelmed.
-
Be Transparent: Share any specific fears your child has (tests, social conflicts). Teachers can often make small adjustments that make a big difference.
-
Plan for Transitions: If your child has been out for several days, ask for a re-entry meeting to establish a supportive plan.
