Every Student Has a Story
Family structures and living arrangements vary greatly. Housing transitions happen due to economic changes, family challenges, illness, or emergencies.
What It Is Not
- Not a student's fault or personal failure
- Not something anyone should ever be ashamed of
- Not a reason to feel isolated or excluded
What We Know
- Over 1 million students navigate housing transitions
- School is a constant community that belongs to you
- You have legally protected rights to support and care
Discussion Prompt: What makes school feel like a dependable, safe space when outside life feels uncertain?

What Living in Transition Looks Like
Housing instability is not just living on the street. It includes many temporary living arrangements.
"Doubled-Up"
Staying temporarily with relatives, friends, or another family due to loss of housing or economic hardship.
Most Common Situation
Motels or Shelters
Living in transitional housing, emergency shelters, or pay-by-week motels while searching for permanent homes.
Eligible for Immediate Support
Foster / Kinship Care
Living with foster parents, in group homes, or with extended family members (kinship) under supportive placement.
Coordinated Academic Rights
Key Insight: You cannot tell someone's living situation by looking at them. Empathy and confidentiality protect everyone.
Legal Protections
Slide 4 of 9
Your School Rights Under the Law
The federal McKinney-Vento Act and foster youth education laws protect your right to stay connected and succeed.
School Stability
Stay at your school of origin even if your living situation changes or you move across district lines.
Transportation Support
School districts must provide or assist with transportation to and from your original school without disruption.
Immediate Enrollment
Enroll right away even if missing birth certificates, immunization records, past transcripts, or proof of address.
Automatic Free Meals
Immediate access to free breakfast and lunch programs with no complex paperwork or public applications required.
Remember: These rights belong to you. You never have to apologize or justify asking for these protections.

How to Start the Conversation
Asking for support can feel intimidating. You do not need to share everything to get help. Here are easy ways to start.
Asking for Yourself
"Things are a little unsettled at home right now, and I need help with [supplies / transit / meals]."
"Could I speak with the counselor or liaison about support for students moving between homes?"
Advocating for a Friend
"A friend of mine is going through a tough move. Who can they talk to for confidential help?"
"Can I walk with my friend down to the counselor's office so they don't have to go alone?"
Quick Tip: An email or a handwritten note left on a teacher's desk works just as well as walking up in person.

How We Protect & Support Each Other
A strong school community ensures no one feels invisible or excluded.
Protect Privacy
Never gossip about where someone lives, why they moved, or what supplies they receive. Dignity is non-negotiable.
Include Everyone
Invite peers to lunch tables, group projects, and clubs without making assumptions about their time or resources.
Know Safe Rooms
Know where counseling, the nurse, and community pantry rooms are located so you can guide anyone in need.
