Part 2 (6 min)
Trigger Talk
Part 3 (8 min)
Brake Toolkit
Part 4 (4 min)
Class Pledge
1
Greeting: The Internal Weather Report (4 Mins)
Community Builder
Students turn to a partner, make friendly eye contact, and share their current internal weather status.
☀️
Clear Skies
Calm, steady, ready
⛅
Breezy Clouds
Mild worry, distracted
🌧️
Rain Shower
Heavy, tired, down
⚡
Static Storm
Frustrated, boiling
Teacher Anchor Line: "No weather report is wrong. Storms happen to all of us. What matters is knowing when thunder is rolling in so we can grab our umbrella."
2
Sharing: What Sparks the Spark? (6 Mins)
Prompt & Discussion
Normalize everyday friction points. Read one relatable scenario aloud or have students vote with thumbs:
The Recess Call
Someone calls you "out" in four-square, but you know the ball was inside the line. You feel instant heat.
The Brain Glitch
You've erased your math problem three times and ripped the page. Your pencil snaps in half.
The Cut-In
You were waiting patiently for the water fountain and someone slides right in front of you without looking.
The Body's Check-Engine Light
Ask the circle: "Before your voice gets loud or your hands get clenched, where does your body warn you first?"
🔥 Hot cheeks / ears 💓 Racing heartbeat ✊ Tight jaw or clenched fists ⚡ Tight knots in stomach

Group Activity: Rehearsing the 4 Emotional Brakes (8 Mins)
Action Rehearsal
Teach and have the whole circle physically try each strategy for 60 seconds. Keep practice active and lighthearted.
Tool 1: Box Trace (4x4)
Students trace the 4 sides of their desk or a palm with one finger:
Inhale 4s Hold 4s Exhale 4s Hold 4s
Tool 2: Lemon Squeeze & Drop
Tense shoulders and fists tight like squeezing sour lemons for 5 seconds... then fully release and drop shoulders with an audible sigh.
Tool 3: The 10-Word Script
Give students a respectful sentence to say when too angry to talk:
"My engine is red right now. I need 2 minutes."
Tool 4: Tactical Grounding
Quick sensory change: drink cold water from a bottle, press feet flat into the floor, or look around and spot 3 blue items in the room.
4
Closing Circle & Classroom Cool-Down Signal (4 Mins)
Action Step
Lightning Round Pledge
Each student in the circle finishes the prompt with 3–5 words:
"When I feel my spark today, I will..."
e.g., "...box breathe", "...ask for water", "...take my 2 minutes."
The "Pit Stop" Silent Hand Signal
Establish a non-verbal cue (e.g., two fingers tapped on the desk or collarbone) meaning:
- I am feeling overwhelmed and need a reset.
- Teacher nods: student can get water or visit the calm corner for 3 mins.
- No public calling out or embarrassment.
Teacher Cheat Sheet: Red-Zone Responses
❌ Avoid: "Calm Down!"
Telling an adrenaline-flooded brain to calm down almost always escalates frustration. Lower your volume instead.
✅ Validate First
"I see you're really frustrated right now. That makes sense. Let's get your body calm before we fix the problem."
⏳ Postpone the Lesson
Logical teaching and debriefing cannot occur during peak arousal. Wait 15–20 minutes until heart rate normalizes.
