Focus: Somatic Anger Regulation
Duration: 30-35 Minutes • 1:1 Setting
Clinical Target & Behavioral Objectives
The student will identify early physiological cues of anger and execute rapid somatic resets to down-regulate sympathetic nervous system activation in under 60 seconds.
Pinpoint 2+ personal somatic alarms (heart rate, clenched jaw/fists).
Master and rehearse 3 physical down-shifting resets in real time.

PHASE 1 Rapport & The Baseline Pulse Check
0 – 5 min
Counselor Script: "Anger isn't a bad emotion, but when it floods our bodies, our brain's reasoning center gets locked out. Today we aren't talking about rules; we are training your body to hit the emergency brake so you stay in charge." Ask student to rate current body tension from 1 (loose noodle) to 10 (steel wire).
PHASE 2 The "Anger Alarm" Psychoeducation
5 – 11 min
Explain fight-or-flight: adrenaline dumps into muscles, lungs take shallow gasps, heart rate spikes. Guide student through Page 2 (The Somatic Body Map). Help them identify where their personal alarm rings first (jaw, chest, fists, stomach). Key Takeaway: The body signals danger 5-10 seconds before verbal or physical reaction.
PHASE 3 Physical Reset Drills (Active Somatic Rehearsal)
11 – 21 min
Demonstrate and practice each of the 3 rapid resets together. Rehearse each technique twice: • Double-Inhale Sigh: 2 fast nose inhales + long, audible unvoiced mouth sigh (triggers vagus nerve).
• Clench & Melt: Squeeze fists/trapezius to level 10 for 5s, suddenly exhale and drop to level 1.
• Sensory Anchor: Cold temperature contact or firm downward foot pressure to ground proprioception.
PHASE 4 High-Stakes Simulation Rehearsal
21 – 27 min
Transition to Page 3. Guide student through a recent, realistic trigger (e.g., losing a game, being accused, peer teasing). Have student act out the physical posture of tension, notice the cue, and immediately deploy their chosen reset. Track tension drop on the 1-10 meter.
PHASE 5 Pocket Plan & Closing Reflection
27 – 30 min
Complete the cut-out "60-Second Rapid Reset" Pocket Card. Student signs commitment and designates where to keep it (pocket, phone case, student ID sleeve, locker). Establish follow-up check-in date.

Fastest Biological Reset
How to do it: Take a deep breath in through your nose... pause... then take one more sharp inhale to pop the lungs fully open. Now release a slow, long sigh through your mouth ("haaaaa") until your lungs are empty.
⏱ Target: 2 reps in 15 seconds ⚡ Why: Forces heart rate to slow within 3 heartbeats

The Clench & Melt (Muscle Tension Dump)
Releases Adrenaline
How to do it: Clench your fists tight, squeeze your shoulders up high, and tighten your stomach like armor for 5 seconds. On count 5, suddenly let go completely, blow all the air out, and let your hands hang like heavy wet noodles.
⏱ Target: Hold 5s • Release 10s ⚡ Why: Fools the brain into recognizing the threat has passed

The Solid Anchor (Proprioceptive Grounding)
Stealth / In-Class Tool
How to do it: Plant both feet totally flat on the floor. Push down firmly through your heels as if trying to push the room down. Touch something cold (a cool desk surface, water bottle, or metal chair leg) and notice the exact texture.
