Group Norms Facilitation Outline
Quick Facilitation Guide
Setting Group Norms: 5 Simple Steps
Grades 4–8 • 45 Minutes Total
A quick, collaborative framework to help students build their own classroom rules of respect and teamwork.
1
Warm-Up: The "Dream Team" (8 min)
Icebreaker
Ask students to think about the best sports team, club, or group project they were ever on.
Say to students: "What did people on that team do that made it feel fun, fair, and safe to share ideas?" (List 4–5 student ideas on the board: listened, cheered mistakes, shared the work.)
2
Rules vs. Norms: What's the Difference? (5 min)
Framing
School Rules Created by adults for safety. Told to us. (e.g., "Don't run in the halls")
Group Norms Agreements we make together for how we treat each other. (e.g., "We listen when someone talks")
3
Brainstorm: 3 Sticky Notes (12 min)
Student Input
Give each student 3 sticky notes. Have them write one answer for each of these 3 prompts:
Note 1: Voice How do we want people to listen when we speak?
Note 2: Mistakes How should the class react when someone gets an answer wrong?
Note 3: Disagreements How do we disagree without being mean?
4
Create 4 "We Promise" Statements (15 min)
Synthesis
Collect notes onto the board, group common ideas, and rewrite them as 4 simple positive sentences:
Instead of: "No interrupting" → "We give each other our full attention."
Instead of: "Don't laugh at wrong answers" → "We treat mistakes as chances to learn."
Instead of: "Don't fight" → "We challenge ideas, not people."
5
The Class Sign-Off (5 min)
Commitment
Write the final 4 statements onto a large piece of poster paper. Have every student sign their name with a marker. Hang the poster where everyone can see it daily.
Facilitator Golden Rule: Keep it to 4 or 5 norms maximum. If students can't say them from memory, they won't remember to use them when working in groups!
