Calm Ops Activity Guide
Small Group Protocol Grade 3 • Boys Emotional Regulation
Calm Ops Activity Guide
FORMAT & DURATION 25-30 Min Group Session
Framing for 3rd Grade Boys: Normalize anxiety as a built-in "Super-Alert Bodyguard" whose alarm sometimes goes off for tests, mistakes, or reading aloud when there is no actual physical danger. Frame skills as training the bodyguard to stay cool.
1
Activity: The Body Radar Check
8-10 Minutes • kinesthetic
Objective: Help boys identify their unique physical warning lights before emotional overwhelm triggers flight, freeze, or clowning/defiance.
Engine Racing
Thumping chest, rapid breathing
Stomach Static
Knots, butterflies, feeling sick
Muscle Armor
Clenched fists, jaw lock, tight neck
Screen Freeze
Blank brain, can't hear the teacher
Counselor Script / Prompt:
"If your body was a video game character, which warning light flashes first when stress spikes in class? Let's point to our radar spot right now."
2
Tactical Desk Resets: The Stealth Moves
10 Minutes • Practice Drill
Objective: Practice 4 discreet, zero-attention somatic tricks boys can fire off at their desks without anyone noticing.
Reset A
The Heavy Desk Anchor
Place both palms flat under the desk. Push up with 50% power for 5 seconds while pressing feet flat into the floor, then release like melting butter.
Burns adrenaline through proprioception
Reset B
The 4-2-6 Stealth Exhale
Breathe in silently through nose (4s), hold without tensing (2s), blow out through barely parted lips like cooling soup (6s). Repeat 3 times.
Forces heart rate decelerator on long exhale
Reset C
The 3-Object Detective Scan
Spot 3 things in the classroom that are pure blue, 2 surfaces with texture, and feel 1 pencil weight in your hand.
Pulls attention from panic loop to sensory environment
Reset D
The Thumb-Press Lock
Squeeze the pad of your right thumb with your left index finger for 4 counts, switch hands. Focus entirely on the tactile pressure.
100% invisible reset during carpet time or tests
Coach's Rule: Always practice resets when calm first, so muscle memory fires under stress.

Discussion & Application
3
Activity: The "In My Ring" Worry Sort
7 Minutes • Interactive Sort
Draw two concentric circles on a mini whiteboard: "Inside My Ring (My Job)" and "Outside The Ring (Not My Job)". Have boys classify real school worries with tokens or tallies.
IN MY RING (Put Energy Here)
- • Asking for scratch paper or a water break
- • Taking my time on problem #4 instead of rushing
- • Choosing who I sit next to at lunch
- • Deciding to try again after getting an X
OUTSIDE MY RING (Drop The Weight)
- • How hard the surprise math drill is
- • What someone whispers across the carpet
- • Rainy day indoor recess decision
- • If the teacher calls on me randomly
4
Scenario Sim: What's The Tactical Play?
8 Minutes • Roleplay & Debate
The Timed Sprint
"Teacher starts the 3-minute math timer. You freeze on question 2 and your chest starts beating like a drum."
Prompt: What stealth reset buys you 10 seconds? What self-talk stops you from crumpling the page?
The Pop-Up Reader
"Teacher says 'Your turn to read paragraph 3 aloud'. Your throat feels like sandpaper and you think you'll mess up."
Prompt: What's the bodyguard lying to you about? What happens in real life if you stumble on a word?
The Recess Squad Pick
"Captains are picking teams for kickball. You're waiting while names are called and worry you'll be last."
Prompt: Is being picked last inside or outside your ring? What is your backup play if kickball falls through?
The Mistake Spiral
"You tear your drawing by mistake or spill glue. You feel a surge of heat and want to kick your chair."
Prompt: Which physical reset stops the chair-kick? What is one power phrase to reset the project?
Fast-Fire Group Debrief Prompts (1-sentence answers)
1. The Fake Alarm: "What is one thing anxiety told you that turned out to be 100% false?"
2. The Pit Crew: "Who is one adult at this school you can give a quiet signal to when red-lining?"
3. Secret Armor: "Which stealth desk reset are you going to test-drive before our next meeting?"
Session Wrap-Up Ritual: "The Mission Fist-Bump"
Each boy says their stealth weapon (e.g., "Heavy Desk Anchor") + gives a fist-bump before heading to class.
Mission Ready
Tip: Keep student index cards with their chosen stealth reset inside their pencil cases. Page 2 of 2
