Your Body Isn't Broken — It's Protecting You
When school feels overwhelming or scary, your nervous system sets off a false alarm. It pumps adrenaline through your body, causing very real physical symptoms like stomach churns, racing heartbeats, or tight head tension. You aren't "faking it"—your alarm is just turned up too high!
Activity 1: My Physical Warning Signals
Check the signals your body gives you before or at school
Head & Chest Signals Tight band / pounding headache Lump in throat / hard to swallow Heart thumping or racing fast Dizziness, lightheaded, or spaced out
Stomach & Body Signals Knotted stomach / nausea / butterflies Hot flashes or sudden cold shivers Clammy/sweaty hands or shaky fingers Tight shoulders / clenching teeth & jaw
Activity 2: Mapping My Morning Body Radar
1. What time of day does your body alarm usually scream the loudest? (e.g., waking up, getting in the car, walking through doors, Sunday night):
2. When my body gives me that #1 warning sign (like a stomachache), what is my brain's immediate thought?

Activity 4: The Thought Flipper (Spotlight Effect)
When anxious, we believe everyone is hyper-focused on us (the Spotlight Effect). Let's flip those catastrophic thoughts into realistic anchor truths:
The Fear Story
"Everyone is judging me and whispering about why I was absent."
The Grounded Truth
"Most 7th graders are worrying about their own tests and friends. If asked, I can just say: 'Just catching up!'"
The Fear Story
"If I start feeling sick in 3rd period, I will be trapped and panic."
The Grounded Truth
"A physical symptom is uncomfortable, but not dangerous. I have an emergency plan and water with me."
