0:00 – 1:00 Signal & Sit
1. Ring Signal & Anchor Hands
Physical Cue: Chest & Belly Hands
Sound chime or tap a slow 2-clap rhythm. Model seating tall with legs criss-cross and eyes soft.
“Hands freeze like gentle statues. Put one warm hand on your chest, and one hand on your belly. Feel that fast fluttering rhythm? We are going to turn that fast flutter into calm, sleepy water.”
1:00 – 2:00 Fill Balloon
2. Big Nose Inhale (Inflate)
Visual: Pick a Favorite Color
Demonstrate filling belly like a beach ball without raising the shoulders. Hold for 2 quiet seconds.
“In your mind, pick your balloon color—mine is blueberry blue! Sniff deep through your nose like smelling fresh cookies... Watch your belly balloon get round, round, round! Hold it gently... 1, 2.”
2:00 – 3:00 Slow Exhale
3. Gentle Candle Breeze (Release)
Audio Cue: Soft “Shhh”
Purse lips softly. Exhale at half-speed. Repeat cycle two full times together in synced silence.
“Now whisper out through tiny lips... shhhhh... like blowing a birthday candle just enough to make it dance without blowing it out. Balloon flattens. Let's do that once more: Big sniff in... gentle breeze out.”
3:00 – 4:00 Body Soften
4. Spaghetti to Marshmallow Scan
Physical Cue: Shoulder Drop
Guide quick progressive tension release from stiff noodle to soft squishy marshmallow.
“Are your shoulders tight like crunchy dry spaghetti? Let's turn them into warm, squishy marshmallows. Drop them down away from your ears. Unclench little fists. Let hands rest like sleeping kittens.”
4:00 – 5:00 Ready Anchor
5. Affirmation & Seamless Transition
Cognitive Seal: Whisper Chant
Seal the calm state with a choral whisper and redirect attention directly to the upcoming lesson.
“Whisper with me: 'My body is calm. My brain is ready.' Give your brain a quiet tap-tap high five. Look at me in 3... 2... 1. Our bodies are settled and we are ready for our story.”
Kindergarten Quick Troubleshooting
- The Active Wiggler: Don't demand frozen stillness. Ask them to press both palms together firmly like a "secret sandwich".
- The Crying/Upset Child: Never force compliance. Sit nearby, place your hand on your own belly, and breathe audibly.
Non-Verbal Visual Anchors
- Sphere Hands: Cup fingers together and expand into an orb as children inhale; collapse fingertips together as they exhale.
- Anchor Chant: Use rhythm “Balloons up, breeze down” anytime during the day to trigger immediate calm recall.
Classroom-tested 5-minute SEL routine Tip: Practice once daily after recess to build subconscious neurological habit
