Welcome to the Zones!
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Today, we're going to embark on an exciting journey to understand something super important: our feelings and our energy levels. It's like learning the secret language of our own bodies and minds!"
Teacher: "We're going to talk about something called the 'Zones of Regulation.' Has anyone heard of this before?" (Pause for responses)
Slide 2:
What are they?
What are the Zones of Regulation?
"The Zones of Regulation are a super helpful way to think about and talk about how we're feeling and how much energy we have. Think of it like a traffic light for your emotions!"
Teacher: "There are four special colors, or zones: Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red. And here's the most important thing to remember: ALL of these zones are okay! We all experience them, and it's totally normal to move between them throughout the day."
Slide 3:
Blue Zone
The Blue Zone: Low Energy
"Imagine a slow, calm ocean or a quiet, sleepy sky. When we're in the Blue Zone, our energy is usually low, and our feelings might be a bit 'down.' What kind of emotions do you think might live in the Blue Zone?"
Guide students to sad, tired, bored, sick, lonely. Prompt for physical feelings: slow, sleepy, droopy, heavy.
Slide 4:
Green Zone
The Green Zone: Just Right!
"Ah, the Green Zone! This is like the 'go' light on a traffic signal. When we're in the Green Zone, we usually feel just right! This is the zone where we're usually at our best for learning, playing, and interacting."
Teacher: "How might your body feel in the Green Zone?" (Prompt for alert, relaxed, in control.)
Slide 5:
Yellow Zone
The Yellow Zone: High Energy
"Think of a yellow traffic light – it means 'slow down' or 'be aware!' When we're in the Yellow Zone, our energy is often high, and we might be starting to lose a little bit of control."
Guide students to frustrated, anxious, excited, silly, nervous. Prompt for physical feelings: fidgety, restless.
Slide 6:
Red Zone
The Red Zone: Out of Control
"And finally, the Red Zone. STOP! When we're in the Red Zone, our energy is extremely high, and we often feel completely out of control. These are our 'big' feelings."
Teacher: "When feelings are this big, it's really important to use tools that help us calm down safely. Sometimes we need help from an adult."
