Becoming a Self-Advocacy Superhero
Slide 7
"Now, let's talk about our second major superpower: Self-Advocacy. This is about speaking up for yourself and your needs. It's knowing when to ask for help and how to do it effectively. Many students struggle with this, but it's a skill that will empower you throughout your life."
Slide 8
"So, how do you ask for help like a PRO? First, be specific. Instead of saying 'I don't get anything,' try 'I'm having trouble with the part about fractions on the math worksheet.' Second, timing is key. Don't wait until the bell rings and I'm trying to leave. Try to ask a question during class, come see me after class for a quick chat, or even send a polite email. And finally, sometimes it helps to suggest a solution – 'Could you explain this example again?' or 'Is there a time I could come in for extra help?'"
Slide 9
"Remember, you have a whole Superhero Squad here to support you! That includes me, your other teachers, counselors, even your classmates and family members. Don't be afraid to reach out to them."
Activity Transition
"I'm going to hand out a quick Self-Advocacy Scenarios Worksheet. I want you to pick one scenario and quickly jot down how you would advocate for yourself in that situation. You'll have about three minutes for this."

Cool Down: My Power-Up Plan
Slide 10
"Alright, let's bring it all together. For our cool-down today, I want you to think about everything we discussed. On this small sheet of paper (or digital note) – our Cool Down: My Power-Up Plan – I want you to write down one study skill you will try to use this week and one self-advocacy strategy you will try to use. For example, maybe you'll try active reading or you'll plan to ask a specific question after class. This is your personal power-up plan! Please hand these to me on your way out."
