Instructional Sequence
1
Introduction: What's the Rush?
5 MIN
• Begin by asking students if they've ever blurted something out without meaning to. Share a brief, relatable anecdote if comfortable.
• Introduce the lesson's purpose: to understand why we blurt and how to communicate more thoughtfully.
• Display Slide 2 of the Slide Deck.
2
Understanding the "Why"
10 MIN
• Lead a discussion using Slides 3-5 to explore common reasons for blurting (excitement, fear of forgetting, wanting to share ideas).
• Ask open-ended questions: "Why do you think people sometimes blurt things out?" "What happens when someone blurts out an answer someone else was about to say?"
• Encourage students to share their experiences in a safe space. Refer to Think-Pair-Share on Blurting for guiding questions.
3
Impact of Blurting
10 MIN
• Use Slides 6-7 to discuss the impact of blurting on the speaker, classmates, and the teacher.
• Emphasize how it can interrupt flow, prevent others from sharing, and make it harder for the teacher to manage the class.
• Facilitate a brief partner discussion: "How does it feel when someone blurts out and you were about to speak?"
4
Strategies for Thoughtful Talking
15 MIN
• Introduce and model strategies using Slides 8-10 :
Strategy 1: The Pause Button (Take a breath, count to three).
Strategy 2: Hand Up, Mouth Shut (Raise hand, wait for recognition).
Strategy 3: Jot it Down (Write down the thought to remember it).
• Practice these strategies with a few hypothetical scenarios or quick questions.
• Allow students to turn and talk to a partner about which strategy they think would work best for them and why.
5
Wrap-up and Reflection
5 MIN
• Distribute the My Speaking Strategy Exit Ticket .
• Ask students to reflect on one strategy they will try to use and why it's important to be a thoughtful talker.
• Collect exit tickets as students leave to gauge understanding and identify areas for future support.
Art of Thoughtful Talking Presentation Communication Lab 01
The Art of
Thoughtful Talking
Understanding why we blurt & strategies for respectful classroom communication.
TEACHER NOTES: Welcome students. Ask them to think about times they've blurted something out and why. Emphasize that this is a common challenge and we're learning to communicate more effectively.
Why Do We Blurt?
PROJECT_BLURT // 02
Have you ever had a thought you just HAD to share right now?
Pure excitement about an idea
Fear of forgetting what to say
Eagerness to participate
Not realizing someone else was about to speak
Feeling like your idea is "mission critical"
Just a reflex or a habit!
"It happens to the best of us. The goal is building awareness."
TEACHER NOTES: Ask students to share their own experiences. Encourage a safe, supportive environment. This slide sets the stage for empathy and self-reflection.
The Ripple Effect
PROJECT_BLURT // 03
Even when we don't mean to, blurting can...
Interrupt
Breaks the focus of others who are speaking.
Exclude
Stops others from getting a chance to share.
Block Learning
Makes it harder for everyone to hear and focus.
Feel Regret
Sometimes makes you feel embarrassed later.
TEACHER NOTES: Transition to discussing the impact. Ask students how it affects the classroom environment. This helps them understand the "why" behind the strategies.
Strategy 1: The Pause Button
Take a moment before you speak.
STOP
Freeze what you are about to say.
BREATHE
Deep breath in, deep breath out.
COUNT
Slowly count 1-2-3 in your head.
TEACHER NOTES: Model this strategy. Explain that taking a moment to breathe and think can make a big difference. Ask students to practice one silent "Pause" right now.
Strategy 2: Hand Up, Mouth Shut
PROJECT_BLURT // 05
Show you have something to say, and wait for the green light.
