Internal Weather Slides The Weather Report
Inside Me
Understanding our feelings through the sky
What is Internal Weather?
Just like the sky outside, our inside feelings change all the time!
"How does your body feel right now? Warm? Heavy? Fast? Still?"
Our body gives us clues about our weather before the "storm" even starts.
The Sunny State
Feeling: Happy, Calm, Ready
Body feels light and relaxed
Heart beats steady and slow
Breathing is easy and deep
☀️
"I feel warm and sparkly inside. I am ready to learn and play!"
The Foggy State
Feeling: Sad, Tired, Bored
Body feels heavy like a wet coat
Thinking feels slow or "fuzzy"
Eyes might want to look down
☁️
"I feel a bit sleepy and slow. My brain is in the clouds today."
The Stormy State
Feeling: Angry, Frustrated
Face feels hot or "red"
Hands want to squeeze or clench
Heart beats like a loud drum
⛈️
"I feel like lightning is in my tummy! I need to move or shout!"
Be a Weather Scientist!
When you feel a "shift" in your body, Stop and Check:
1. PAUSE
Freeze for a moment
2. SCAN
Check head to toes
3. NAME IT
"I have storm clouds"
Tools for the Climate
We can't always change the outside weather, but we can help our inside weather!
Cooling Wind
Take 3 deep breaths to cool down a Stormy heart.
Sunshine Shake
Shake your body to wake up from the Foggy state.
Under the Umbrella
Find a quiet corner if you feel a Rainy day coming.
Helpful Hands
Talk to a teacher or friend if you need a forecast check.
You are the Meteorologist!
Every kind of weather is okay.
It's just information about how you feel.

Objective
Students will increase interoception (awareness of internal body states) by identifying physical sensations associated with emotions using weather metaphors. Students will learn to "check their forecast" and choose self-regulation tools.

Instructional Sequence
1 Introduction: The Sky Outside & Inside (5 mins)
"Look out the window! What is the weather like today? Just like the world outside has weather, our bodies have weather too. We call this 'Internal Weather.' Sometimes it's sunny and calm, and sometimes a big storm builds up before we even notice!"
2 Exploring Weather States (15 mins)
Use the Slides to walk through Sunny, Foggy, and Stormy states. For each:
Check the Body:
"In a Stormy state, where do you feel the heat? Is it in your face? Your chest? Your hands?"
Movement Pause:
Ask students to "act out" the feeling with their bodies (stiff/tight for stormy, loose/wiggly for sunny).
3 Forecasting Practice (10 mins)
Teach the Stop, Scan, Name process. Practice this three times as a class. Use "silly" triggers (e.g., "Imagine someone took your favorite pencil") and ask them what weather they feel appearing.
4 The Body Map Worksheet (15 mins)
Hand out the worksheets. Students identify where in their bodies they feel specific "weather" clues. For example, drawing lightning on the tummy if they feel butterflies or anger there.
5 Creating Weather Vanes (15 mins)
Students color and assemble their weather vanes. This becomes a desk-tool they can use to communicate their internal climate to the teacher without words.
Teacher Tips & Misconceptions
Neutralizing Weather: Emphasize that "Bad Weather" isn't "Bad Behavior." Thunderstorms are natural and necessary in nature, just like anger is a natural emotion. The goal isn't to stay sunny forever, but to manage the storms.
Interoception Hurdles: Some students may struggle to feel sensations. Encourage them to use "Maybes" (e.g., "Maybe my hands feel a little tight?"). Physical markers like "warm" vs "cool" are usually easier for K-2 than abstract concepts.

Bringing the "Internal Weather" Home
What is Internal Weather?
Today, your child learned how to identify their "internal weather"—the physical sensations that happen in our bodies before we even notice a big emotion. Just like the sky outside, our inside feelings change all the time. By learning to "check the forecast," children can use tools to manage their climate before a "storm" hits.
The Weather Guide
Sunny
Feeling: Calm, Happy, Ready
Body feels light, relaxed, and breathing is steady. This is a great time for learning and connecting!
Stormy
Feeling: Angry, Frustrated
Body feels tight, heart beats fast, or face feels hot. Coping Tool: 3 deep breaths or wall-pushes.
Foggy
Feeling: Tired, Bored, "Fuzzy"
Body feels heavy or slow. Brain feels sleepy. Coping Tool: A big body shake or a cold sip of water.
Rainy
Feeling: Sad, Lonely, Quiet
Body feels "drippy" or heavy. Eyes want to look down. Coping Tool: A hug or a quiet cozy corner.
How to Help
Use "Weather Words"
Instead of asking "What's wrong?", try "What's your internal weather right now?"
Check Your Own Forecast
Model it! Say, "I have some storm clouds in my chest because work was busy. I'm going to take a breath."
Pause for Sensation
Ask: "Is your heart beating like a drum or a lullaby? Does your tummy feel like lightning or a sunny beach?"
