A hands-on, interactive social-emotional workshop for third graders to design and use a breathing wand. Students learn deep-breathing cycles by sliding beads along a pipe cleaner to visualize and regulate their emotions.
Demonstrate how to coil one end of the pipe cleaner around the top of the stick. Emphasize wrapping it multiple times so it stays anchored when beads slide.
2 Thread & Create the Track
Students slide on exactly 4 or 5 pony beads. Demonstrate wrapping the lower end around the bottom of the stick. Leave a curved arch so the beads can move easily.
Craft Troubleshooting: Tight Beads
If the pipe cleaner is pulled completely flat against the wooden stick, the beads will be jammed and won't slide. Make sure students bend the pipe cleaner slightly outward, creating a small "track" or "bridge" for the beads.
Phase 3: Activating Wand Magic (10 Minutes)
Transition to Slide 5. Lead a quiet, physical demonstration of using the wand.
Guided Practice Script:
"Let's activate our magic wands! Slide all your beads to the very top. Now, breathe in deeply through your nose. As you breathe in, slide the first bead down slowly. Hold it at the bottom. Hold your breath for one second... Now, blow out slowly through your mouth like you're blowing out birthday candles, and slide the second bead down. Excellent. Repeat this with each bead."
Reflection & Modifications (5 Minutes)
Reflective Prompts:
How does your chest feel now compared to before?
Where in your desk can we keep this so it's always ready?
When can we use this? (e.g. before tests, after recess).
Fine Motor Modifications:
If wrapping the wire is frustrating for some students, wrap tape around the pipe cleaner tips beforehand. For kids with tremors, swap sticks for thick paper straws.
