Part 1 Instructional Script & Activities
Warm-Up: Emotion Check-In (5 Mins)
0:00 - 0:05
Have students sit in a circle on the rug. Open the slideshow to Slide 1.
Say: "Good morning, feelings explorers! Today, we are going on an adventure to learn about our feelings! Did you know our faces are like dynamic movie screens? They show how we feel on the inside! Put your hands on your cheeks. Show me your reading-ready face! Excellent."
Do: Point to the slide showing the four basic faces. Ask: "Can anyone tell me what a feeling is? Yes, it's how our heart and brain react to things that happen to us. Let's meet our first feeling face!"
Teacher Modeling: Happy & Sad (5 Mins)
0:05 - 0:10
Say: "First is HAPPY . When I feel happy, my mouth curves up like this (smile wide), my eyes get wrinkly, and my body feels light and warm. Let's make a happy face together! Hold it! (Praise students). Now, let's meet SAD . Sometimes things happen that make us sad. When we are sad, our mouth curves down, our cheeks drop, and sometimes a tear might come out. Our bodies might feel heavy. Let's make a gentle sad face together."
Ask: "Look at my eyes when I am happy vs. sad. What changes? That's right! Happy eyes are bright and round. Sad eyes look sleepy or droop down."

Teacher Modeling: Mad & Scared (5 Mins)
0:10 - 0:15
Say: "Next up is MAD . We all feel mad sometimes, and that is okay! When we feel mad, our eyebrows squeeze together like this (furrow brows), our lips press tight, and our hands might squeeze into fists. Let's make a safe mad face together! Excellent. Now, let's look at SCARED . When we are scared, our eyes open super wide, our eyebrows pull up, and our mouth might open wide like we are gasping. Our body might feel shaky. Let's make our scared face."
Teach: "All feelings are okay to feel! They are like weather in our bodies—they come, and they go. Knowing what face we are making helps us and our friends understand each other."
Guided Practice: Emotion Charades (8 Mins)
0:15 - 0:23
Utilize the "Emotion Charades Cards" printed and cut ahead of time.
Do: Hold up the pile of Charades cards. "Now, we are going to play a game! I am going to invite a silent volunteer to draw a card from my feelings basket. They will act out that feeling using ONLY their face and body—no words! Let's see if the rest of our feelings explorers can guess what emotion it is!"
Praise: When students guess correctly, say: "Fantastic eye detective work! What clues did you see on Charlie's face that told you he was happy? Yes, a smiling mouth and bright eyes!" Try to get through 4-5 cards so each of the 4 emotions is represented.
Independent Practice & Coloring (5 Mins)
0:23 - 0:28
Do: Send students back to their desks. Hand out the Color the Feeling Worksheet or Feeling Faces Playbook .
Say: "Now, feelings detectives, return to your drawing tables! You have your very own feeling face worksheet. Let's color-code each face: Yellow for Happy, Blue for Sad, Red for Mad, and Purple for Scared. Trace the feeling word under each face so your brain remembers the feeling's name!"
Wrap-Up: Reflect & Share Circle (2 Mins)
0:28 - 0:30
Say: "Bring your sheet and meet me back in our community circle! Look at all these beautiful colorful faces. Let's go around: show me on your face how you are feeling right this second! It's so amazing that we can share our feelings together. Keep your Mood Meter on your desk to show me how you feel every single morning!"
