VOLCANO TAMERS
Self-Regulation & Calming Strategies in Social Settings
GROUP SIZE
3 STUDENTS
Mission Objective
Students will learn to recognize early physical warning signs of anger and frustration (the "rumble" phase) and practice applying targeted calming strategies to keep their "social volcano" from erupting during cooperative interactions.
Materials Checklist
Volcano Tamers Slides
Volcano Tamers Journals (1 per student)
Red, Yellow, & Green markers/crayons
A small block-building game or board game
Suggested Pacing
1. Seismic Check-In 5 mins
2. Mapping the Rumble 10 mins
3. The Cooling Chamber 10 mins
4. Lava Cooperative Play 10 mins
5. Final Debrief 5 mins
PART 1
Seismic Check-In (5 Mins)
FACILITATOR SCRIPT / PROMPT:
"Welcome, Seismologists! Today, we are monitoring our inner weather. Have you ever felt a giant, hot bubble of anger or frustration rising inside you, like a volcano ready to erupt during a game? Today, we are learning how to tame that volcano so we can keep playing and having fun together."
Action: Have each student share their current "seismic level" (1 to 5, where 1 is calm water and 5 is active lava). Use this time to establish a safe, supportive small-group environment.
PART 2
Mapping the Rumble (10 Mins)
Introduce the three zones of emotional seismic activity:
GREEN ZONE
State: Cool & Steady. Breathing is normal, body is relaxed, ready to play nicely.
YELLOW ZONE
State: The Rumble. Warm hands, tight chest, negative self-talk starting.
RED ZONE
State: Eruption! Yelling, throwing pieces, shutting down, or leaving.

PART 3
The Cooling Chamber (10 Mins)
Introduce the 3 Volcano-Taming Actions . Emphasize that these actions must be practiced before the red zone erupts.
1. Pressure Release Valve (Deep Breaths)
Inhale cool mountain air for 4 seconds, hold for 2, exhale hot lava for 4 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
2. Earth Anchor (Physical Grounding)
Press palms flat on the table, squeeze hands tight, and slowly release. Feel the solid ground beneath.
3. Seismic Signal (Using Words)
Teach students to use a structured statement: "I am feeling rumbling right now. I need to take a 30-second break."
PART 4
Lava Cooperative Play (10 Mins)
Now, students will put their tools into practice in a real-time, low-stakes social game (e.g., building a block tower together or playing a quick matching turn-based game).
FACILITATOR INTERVENTION PLAN:
During play, watch for "Yellow Zone" behaviors (e.g., sighing, snatching, rushing). Instantly pause the game and announce:
"Seismic alert! I notice a little rumble. Let's all activate our Pressure Release Valve together before we place the next piece."
PART 5
Final Debrief & Reflection (5 Mins)
Wrap up by having students open their Volcano Tamers Journals to Page 2. Encourage them to draw or write their customized "cooling system." Give them their home connection card to share with family.

Are you ready to become a...
VOLCANO TAMER?
Let's learn how to spot emotional rumbles and use calming strategies so we can play, work, and hang out safely together!

Zone Map Understanding Your Internal Weather
The 3 Emotional Zones
Green Zone
Cool & Steady. Your body feels relaxed, your mind is open, and you are ready to listen and play!
"I'm feeling good to go!"
Yellow Zone
The Rumble. Your jaw is tight, your heart is starting to race, and you might feel a little frustrated.
"I need to slow down."
Red Zone
Active Eruption. Yelling, pushing, throwing, or shutting down completely. Hard to think clearly.
"STOP! I need support!"
Always watch for the Yellow Zone—that is when we take action! Slide 2 of 5
Bio-Feedback Spotting Body Signals
What Does Your Rumble Feel Like?
A volcano doesn't erupt out of nowhere. Deep underground, there are shifts, shakes, and heat. Your body does the same thing before you erupt!
Think & Share:
"Where do you feel the rumble first? In your hands? In your chest? In your thoughts?"
Hot Temperature
Cheeks getting warm, hands sweating, or feeling suddenly overheated.
Fast Heartbeat
Feeling your heart beat rapidly like a drum in your chest.
Muscle Tension
Clenched fists, locked jaw, or tight shoulders.
Rushing Thoughts
Thoughts moving too fast, thinking "This is unfair!" or "I want to leave."
Recognizing these body triggers is your superpower! Slide 3 of 5
Cooling Tactics Taming Strategies
Your Volcano-Taming Action Pack
When you spot the rumble (Yellow Zone), pick one of these 3 actions to release the pressure safely!
Pressure Valve
Inhale cool mountain air for 4 seconds, hold for 2, then blow out warm lava for 4 seconds.
Earth Anchor
Press your palms completely flat against the table or floor. Squeeze tight, feel the solid earth, and release.
Seismic Signal
Use strong, calm words:
"I am rumbling.
I need a 30-second break."
Let's practice the Pressure Valve together right now! Slide 4 of 5

Activity 1: Spot My Body Signals
Before a volcano erupts, it rumbles. Read the signals below. Put a checkmark [✓] next to the signals your body gives you when you start feeling angry or frustrated:
My heart beats super fast 💓 My cheeks feel very hot or red 🥵 My breathing gets short & fast 💨 I feel like crying or screaming 😢
I clench my fists tight ✊ My shoulders get stiff and tight 🪨 I block out sound or shut down 😶 Other signal: _________________
Activity 2: My Emotional Volcano
Color this volcano's levels: the Base Green (Calm), the Middle Yellow (Rumble), and the Top Red (Erupting). In the blank fields below, write what triggers your "Rumble"!
