A dynamic socio-emotional and academic resilience lesson teaching 6th graders how to bypass the shutdown response when facing confusing schoolwork using three concrete steps: Calm and Reset, Break It Down, and Upgrade Your Ask.
“Can I multiply 45 by 12? Yes! That gives $540 total sales. Subtract $180 = $360 profit.”
Think-Aloud Cue 3 (Ask): Pretend to freeze on the percentage portion. Model the stem: “Ms. Lopez, I found the $360 total profit, but I need clarification on whether to calculate percentage against total sales or net profit.”

Part 2: Practice & Assessment
4. Guided Partner Rehearsal (12 Mins)
Worksheet Sections A–C
Distribute the Unstuck Protocol Worksheet. Have students pair up to tackle the “Overload Challenge” prompt.
• Phase A: Students independently practice the 2-breath reset and write their rewritten self-talk statement.
• Phase B: Partners use highlighters to isolate action verbs and circle the first solvable micro-step.
• Phase C: Student A role-plays being stuck; Student B prompts them with: “Tell me what you know so far and use a help stem.” Switch roles after 2 minutes.
5. Debrief & Exit Ticket Assessment (8 Mins)
Independent Check
Call class back together. Distribute the Unstuck Protocol Exit Ticket. Students independently complete the 3 diagnostic items to demonstrate readiness to apply the protocol during core subjects.
Key Question to Pose: “How does asking a targeted question make you feel more in charge of your learning compared to saying ‘I don’t get it’?”
Misconception: “Asking for help means I’m not smart.” Counter-Move: Reframe asking as executive coaching. NASA engineers and top surgeons ask questions constantly; guessing or shutting down causes failures.
Misconception: “If I don't finish fast, I'm bad at math/reading.” Counter-Move: Praise stamina and accurate chunking over speed. Speed often causes careless misreading of instructions.
Differentiated Support Pathways
Support / Striving
Provide pre-printed Help Stem desk tent.
Give a physical masking card with a cut-out window for reading 1 line at a time.
English Learners
Provide translated cognates for key verbs (e.g., calculate = calcular).
Partner with a bilingual peer to orally practice stems before writing.
Extension / Fast Finishers
Have students write a “Peer Help Guide” analyzing how to answer someone who uses each help stem.
Serve as “Protocol Coaches” during independent work.

Step 1 (Calm & Reset): What 10-second action will you take before touching your keyboard or paper?
Step 2 (Break It Down): What single micro-task will you complete first during the next 5 minutes?
Step 3 (Upgrade Your Ask): If you still freeze after step 1 & 2, write the exact sentence you will say to your teacher:
