Tier 3 Intervention: Transforming Thoughts
30 MIN
OBJECTIVE
Students will identify negative automatic thoughts and utilize a step-by-step reframing process to "upgrade" them into realistic, positive alternatives to improve emotional regulation.
WHY THIS MATTERS
For students in 5th grade, social and academic pressures often trigger "all-or-nothing" thinking. This lesson equips them with trauma-informed active learning strategies to recognize how internal dialogue influences behavior, fostering resilience and emotional well-being.

01
The Diagnostic (Intro)
5 MINS
Check-in: Discuss how thoughts are like the "engine" of our feelings.
Inquiry Question: "Have you ever had a thought that felt like a flat tire? How did it make you feel?"
Validate the experience of negative thoughts as a normal part of being a "mind mechanic."
02
Training Manual (Video)
5 MINS
Watch the designated video on Managing Emotions.
Discussion: Ask, "What was one tool from the video you think could help 'fix' a negative thought?"
03
Thought Upgrade (Activity)
15 MINS
Hand out the Thought Upgrade Worksheet .
Guide the student through identifying a recent "faulty thought."
Reframing Process: Help them look for evidence. Is it 100% true? How can we upgrade it to be more realistic/positive?
Ask: "How does the 'upgraded' thought feel compared to the old one?"
04
Quality Control (Closure)
5 MINS
Recap the "Mind Mechanic" tools learned today.
Commitment: "What is one positive thought you'll keep in your 'toolbox' this week?"
Encourage them to practice a "thought check" whenever they feel heavy emotions.
Pro Mechanic Tip
For Tier 3 students, focus on small wins. Even a slight shift (e.g., from "I'm a failure" to "I'm having a hard time right now") is a successful upgrade. Validate the emotion first before trying to reframe the thought.
