Investigation Procedure
Step
01
Warm-Up: Quick Clue Hunt
5 MINS
Begin with the Quick Clue Hunt activity. Ask students to quickly jot down a thought and an associated feeling. Briefly discuss their responses, emphasizing that thoughts and feelings are connected like a motive and a crime.
Step
02
Briefing: The Evidence
10 MINS
Use the Investigation Briefing Slides to introduce automatic thoughts. Explain the role of a "Thought Detective" and the goal: identify and challenge. Define key terms: automatic thoughts, cognitive distortions, and evidence-based challenging.
Step
03
Gameplay: Mystery Thought Cards
Active Game (20 MINS)
Divide students into small groups. Distribute Mystery Thought Cards and Detective's Log Worksheets.
Each card presents a scenario and a suspect thought.
Groups discuss and identify distortions (the "suspects").
Brainstorm ways to challenge the thought with a "balanced verdict."
Circulate to facilitate. After 15 minutes, have groups share their best "solved case."
Step
04
Cool-Down: Reflection Debrief
10 MINS
Conclude with the Reflection Debrief. Ask students to reflect on how they might apply these skills in their real lives. Collect the debriefs as an informal assessment of understanding.
